Alberto & Sal are transitioning into stewardship roles at Chispas Farm this year, so it’s time for a little introduction!

Alberto Romero is from ABQ, NM! He has been working in agriculture since 2017, starting at the Heritage Farm at ABQ Botanical Gardens, then spending 4 years in Oregon deepening skills & studying regenerative growing philosophies. Back in ABQ he was Lead Farmer at Los Poblanos Farm before moving to Chispas in 2023. In all the growing operations he has taken part in Chispas Farm is the one that feels the most valuable and he is excited at the prospect of stoking the fires and forging a new era for this farm that is so important to our local community. 🙌

Sal Palmero is from Gallup, NM, & Kennebunk, ME! They’ve been back in NM since late 2019 and at Chispas Farm since 2021. Prior to farming they were a wildlife and birding guide for Wildside Nature Tours, co-ran a comics drawing residency program in Pittsburgh, PA, and also spent a year in Oregon at Aprovecho School for Sustainability studying natural building practices. Having set down roots in New Mexico once again, farming has become their main interest and being a crew member at Chispas has grown into something much larger. They are excited to continue developing their skills and actively learning as part of the stewardship team in the next few years.

A season of transition at Chispas! Casey is moving to new fields and pastures, although just around the corner from the farm. See their full story & update in the slides above! 👏

Their legacy & what they built at Chispas will continue to define the space, & while new stewards pick up the broadforks & seedlings & carry on the work of tending to this farm, we do so as farmers whom Casey helped grow as much as any of the seeds planted here in the last 9 years!

Alberto Romero & Sal Palmero will be the new farm stewards, & the rest of the crew is staying on. There are plenty more exciting things to dream up & do here. Meanwhile we’re so excited to cheer on Casey as they take their teaching, tending, & leadership skills to Grow the Grower & beyond!

We are selling some of our sweet doelings! These 4 girls are mostly Nubian, and come from great milking stock. They all have good temperaments and would be excellent additions to a goat herd or raised on their own. Please email our State Senator & Representatives & ask them to vote YES on the NM Regional Farm to Food Bank Program (HB 101 and SB 108)! This will help to ensure continued support for our local producers (like Chispas!) and the communities we feed 🙏🏼

The Regional Farm to Food Bank Program has invested funds in more than 200 New Mexico local food producers. Last year they were one of our biggest wholesale relationships - so much good veg from Chispas went to the program, and was then distributed to food banks and food pantries throughout the state!

We are back to work at Chispas today, and were greeted by new lambs from Hekate. They’re doing well so far, despite being smaller than some of our chickens! 😂

That’s a wrap on the 2025 season at Chispas Farm!

We are feeling incredibly blessed by our most successful growing season ever, and one of the most fun years at the farm in recent memory. There were some major lows too, with tragic animal deaths (RIP Strider, Zagreus, Zinnia, Gooseberry, & others), but the highs were so sweet, it all balances out.

So much gratitude to our CSA members and market customers, and to the wholesale partners who really helped us get our bounty of food out into our community. We loved our volunteers and interns, and the school groups we hosted. And the parties this year were lit! farm dances, ’s Pride is a Protest art festival, .abq craft markets, graduation celebrations & wedding ceremonies - and of course the epic, soul-healing Farm Rager/Rave that .catalyst .hidetanning threw in October was the grande finale.

The crew this year was rock solid, with most of us on our 2nd-5th-10th+ season at Chispas, and going strong. We look forward to 2026 with all the tender & terrific changes the year will bring, and meanwhile we are ON BREAK UNTIL JAN. 13th!

Late season vibes at Chispas - garlic is popping, sheds are getting cleaned out, holiday markets bring joy, snow confuses the goats, chicken coop is refreshed & manure is spread on fields…and the Sandhill Cranes circle and call above it all!

Seed cleaning/saving week at Chispas! Red & Golden Amaranth, Colorado River Beans, Tepery Beans, Fava Beans, Sonoran Winter Wheat, Khorasan, and Blue Corn, and some flower varieties too! Lots of threshing & winnowing and all kinds of laughter and wonder. Every year it charms us again, how delightful seeds are!

We will grind the wheats into flour, saving some for wheat berries & seed for planting, and same with the amaranth. The Colorado River Beans are yummy to eat, and the Tepery are special and saved for planting and the future. Fava is for planting and also eating, and blue corn is another we will grind for flour. So much goodness!

Carrot harvest, sheep in the hoop house to clear the way for winter fava bean and peas, and garlic planting! The season is drawing to a close and the fields are getting wrapped up in cover crop blankets, tucked in for winter. 💜
