Successful Holidays

With the holiday season comes a rush of activities and obligations. People dash here and there, trying to get everything done. One little snag can unravel a whole day's worth of plans. So it pays to plan ahead and do a little spellwork for success.

For this spell, you need a small portable holiday decoration from any event in the season. This could be a turkey for Thanksgiving or a reindeer for Yule, or more generally a leaf for autumn or a snowflake for winter. Hold it in your hands and visualize completing your holiday activities successfully. Then say:

Festive spirits of the fall
And the winter, heed my call!
Banish glitch, delay, and mess;
May my efforts meet success.

Hang the ornament where you do most of your holiday tasks. That may be your kitchen, your home office, or even your car. Whenever you need a little boost, just touch it and recite the incantation again.

Manifestation Pomanders

Use the full supermoon's powerful energy to help you manifest your dreams for the upcoming year with these Manifestation Pomanders. Bright citrusy oranges studded with protective clove and cinnamon are the perfect vehicle for magickal intentions. Add a gold ribbon for hanging over the Yuletide season, or place them in a bowl as a reminder that magick happens for those who believe.

You will need:

A paring knife
Whole oranges
Small scraps of paper
A toothpick
Whole cloves
Ground cinnamon
Gold ribbon (optional)
Under the light of the moon, use a paring knife to create a slice at the top of an orange deep enough to tuck in a small piece of scrap paper. Write your intention on a piece of scrap paper and push it into the slit. Use a toothpick to pierce holes in a pattern of your choosing around the orange (Spirals and star patterns work great for this kind of project.) Place whole cloves into the piercings, and dust the orange with cinnamon. Wrap gold ribbon around the orange and hang if you choose.

The pomanders will dry over several weeks. Save them until Imbolc to burn and release your intentions.

Safe Journeys

This spell can be done every time you travel by automobile. Starting at the hood of your vehicle, walk clockwise around it three times. Call upon deities, ancestors, spirit beings, or the bountiful universe. Chant:

May this vehicle be protected from all of humankind, all of nature, and all of their creation. Keep this vehicle running well, functioning correctly, and safe. Guard and protect this vehicle. As my will, so it must be.

You may wish to request special protection against specific hazards, such as inclement weather.

An additional way to protect a car or truck is to use essential oils such as frankincense or patchouli to inscribe sigils on the hubcaps and bumpers. When dried, the symbol will be invisible. A rune for safe travels is Ehwaz, which represents transportation, motion, and a journey. Keep an amulet of protection, such as an Eye of Horus or a pentagram, on your key chain. A bay leaf in your console or glove box brings about a blessed journey.

Conversation with Death

We are just past Samhain and the Day of the Dead celebration. Now is a good time to confront our own feelings about mortality and have a conversation with Death.

Sit where you will be undisturbed for about twenty minutes and where there is an empty chair facing you. Imagine a figure representing the personification of Death seated in the other chair. This figure is not a threat to you and has not come to claim you at this moment. Death is here for conversation. Talk about your fears surrounding this large transition, whether it’s losing a loved one, leaving loved ones, not knowing what comes next, or anything else. Verbalize what frightens or saddens you. Let your intuition provide the other side of the conversation. It may be difficult, but it will bring a sense of comfort.

At the end, thank Death for their time, and let any fear or tension drain down into the ground.

Dreaming Bath

This traditional herbal bath aids with divinatory dreams, especially contact with guiding spirits. You will need:

1 part chamomile flowers, dried
1 part fennel seeds, dried
½ part lavender flowers, dried
½ part passionflower leaves and/or flowers, dried
Mortar and pestle
A mesh bag or large tea strainer (for the herbs)

Mix your ingredients together and bruise lightly with a mortar and pestle. Add the mixture to a mesh bag or large tea strainer, then add to a bath of hot water. Leave your herbs in the water while you bathe, which can be for as long as you like. (To adapt this spell to a shower, you could let the herbs steep in hot water in a plastic pitcher or large bowl and then pour it over your head.) I recommend doing this right before going to sleep. After drying off and before going to bed, recite this charm:

As I sleep, surround my bed.
Let no nightmares fill my head.
As for tomorrow, let me rise
With truthful visions in my eyes.

It's said that the dreams you have after this bath will be messages from your guardian angel, guiding spirits, and blessed ancestors.

Piercing the Veil of Illusion

Samhain, when the veil between worlds grows thin, is an ideal time to see through illusory thoughts and stories that are no longer serving you. You'll need a tarot or oracle deck and incense. Light the incense and shuffle your deck, then draw a card and hold it above the incense, allowing the smoke to waft around the card, partially obscuring your view. Allow your intuition to awaken, the drifting of the smoke gently altering your state of consciousness.

State this intention:

I pierce the veil of illusion, the truth laid bare in accordance with the highest good.

Then pull the card out of the smoke. Gaze at the image, allowing your intuition to draw your attention to relevant features. What beliefs about yourself, your situation, or others need to be questioned and revised? Open to receive the messages that are correct and good for you.

Protective Pumpkin

The end of this month and the beginning of the next feature a cluster of holidays about spooks, spirits, and tricksters. People get excited and may try shenanigans that they would otherwise know better than to attempt. That can make for some risky adventures. So this is a good time to work protection spells for safekeeping.

For this spell, you need a whole pumpkin. Medium size is ideal so you have plenty of room to work, but pie size or miniature will work if that's all you can find at this late date. Paint your pumpkin with protection symbols, such as the Triple Goddess (full moon between two crescents), Horned God (circle with a crescent above), hamsa (hand with an eye in the palm), ankh (cross with a loop for the top), or evil eye amulet (a blue eye). Place it at the entrance to your home and say:

Pumpkin strong and pumpkin sound,
Stand your guard and ward this door
From all spirits going 'round
Behind, beside, or before.

Communication Clarity

Wednesday is named for the Anglo-Saxon deity Wodan, who is conflated with the Norse god Oðin, the ancient Greek entity Hermes, and the Roman god Mercury. Tonight is also when Mercury reaches its greatest eastern elongation, when the planet will be visible in a clear sky in the evening.

Mercury is the god of translators, interpreters, and commerce, while Hermes is the herald of Olympus, representing communication, information, and reasoning. To help foster optimal understanding between yourself, loved ones, coworkers, and/or authority figures, call upon Mercury on this night.

Using green ink, write three key points that you wish to communicate on paper, and memorize them. Next, wrap the paper around three caraway seeds, parsley, bergamot herb (available in teas), and a star anise seed, along with a green stone, such as emerald, peridot, or jade. Carry this charm with you when you must impart crucial information.

To Summon a Spirit Spell

To communicate with a friendly spirit, begin by draping your altar in black. You'll also need a black candle in a holder, a pinch of culinary sage, and a dark magic mirror. If you don't have a magic mirror, try this. Place a black sheet of construction paper behind the blank glass of a picture frame. Darken the room. Sit before the mirror. Safely light the candle and sprinkle the sage around the candleholder. Call to the spirit:

To the spirit, (say the spirit's name), I must speak.
It is you that I seek
As you were with blood and bone
When the Earth was your home!
Come in peace to me.
Come now, come gently.
So it must be.

The mirror/glass will mist over, then the image may appear. The spirit may look younger and healthier than you remember. Ask one question. They may answer with a gesture or a thought. Keep the session to no more than ten minutes. Thank the spirit and end the session. If the spirit doesn't appear, try again in a week. Safely s***f out the candle and let cool. Put away your supplies and discard the sage.
