Archaeologists have uncovered typical “ma*****na” braziers and burned stones dating back to around 500 B.C. in tombs located deep within Central Asia’s Pamir Mountains. Residue analysis suggests that strong cannabis was intentionally used in ancient burial rites, highlighting a ritualistic aspect of this early culture.

The evidence comes from Jirzankal Cemetery, where a team led by archaeologist Yimin Yang from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing documented the findings. The braziers, often accompanied by burned stones, would have been used to release the aromatic smoke of cannabis, possibly as part of ceremonial practices intended to honor the dead or facilitate spiritual journeys.

These discoveries provide a rare glimpse into prehistoric ritual use of psychoactive plants, demonstrating both cultural sophistication and spiritual beliefs in ancient Central Asian societies. The findings underscore the long-standing human relationship with cannabis, extending back more than 2,500 years.
