We are so excited the amazing Dr. Mateo Garcia will be joining the faculty at the University of New Mexico Dept of Emergency Medicine as one of our EM and EMS faculty members.

The UNM EMS Consortium is so excited and proud to announce that one of our current fellows and former ED resident, Dr. Mateo Garcia, will be joining the group as an Emergency Medicine/EMS Faculty member in July of 2022. Dr. Garcia will bring his passion for education into the Consortium having notably been awarded an Excellence in Teaching Award in 2021 as well as Resident Educator of the Year in 2020. Before medical school, Dr. Garcia worked with the United States Forest Service (USFS) as a wildland firefighter and member of the Mount Taylor Hotshots. His devotion to the USFS continues and will be working with them as a Local Emergency Medicine Advisor. Welcome to the team Dr. Garcia!

Amazing job from our Faculty and Fellows supporting local law enforcement and being there to save civilian lives! The Tactical EMS section of the UNM EMS Consortium is absolutely amazing.

What began as a SWAT callout turned into a medical emergency. Fortunately, two University of New Mexico emergency physicians were on hand to perform life-saving measures.

The residency program’s monthly journal club is hosted at a faculty member’s house - last night’s host was Dr. Jon Femling. One of the senior residents leads a deep dive into the literature. Last night, Dr. Erik Anderson (PGY3) taught everyone about the ROX Index and its role in predicting the need for intubation in COVID-19 patients. The best part, though, was cooking smores in the fire.

The residents had the opportunity to work alongside the UNM EMS Consortium and International Mountain Medicine Center to provide first aid at the Sandia Crest Marathon! Two of our residents ended up being the first responders to a motorcycle wreck that happened nearby one of the aid stations.

The UNM EM Residency has a newly revamped Flight Physician track! 6 of our second-year class just finished their flight orientation, and are even now flying around the state transporting critically ill patients. 3 of them can go on to become fully-fledged, independent flight physicians in their third-year. Thanks !

Serve, Innovate, Lead.

“The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of New Mexico is a vibrant and growing center of academic excellence in the beautiful ‘Land of Enchantment.’ Our institutional mission focuses on advancing health in New Mexico through education, clinical service, advocacy and research. The Department of Emergency Medicine has supported this mission since 1987 through its outstanding research, clinical services and innovative educational programs.

Clinically, we serve as the academic tertiary center for New Mexico, the state’s only Level 1 Trauma Center, the only children’s hospital and the safety net hospital for well over a million people. The Department of Emergency Medicine is nationally known for its work in trauma care, pediatric emergency medicine and as a center for excellence in critical care with the largest group of EM trained intensivists in the country. The strong clinical environment provides the foundation for our innovative educational programs of which the 3 year EM residency is the centerpiece. We also have a dedicated EM experience for medical students in the 3rd and 4th years at UNM and electives for rotating students in EM, Toxicology, Wilderness Medicine, Disaster Medicine, EM/Critical Care and EMS. Our research strengths have traditionally included public health, injury prevention, health care policy and pediatric emergency medicine. In the last few years we have started to grow our clinical and translational research core and currently have three faculty members doing translational research in the areas of microbiology and biosensor technology. Our EMS Academy is home to a number of unique training programs including the Air Force Pararescue program, and one of the only UIAA certified Mountain Medicine programs in the country. The UNM EMS consortium provides real time medical direction and physician response across New Mexico and recently took over medical direction for the NPS in the Grand Canyon.

Thank you for visiting and please take some time to explore our page. I have been in the Department of Emergency Medicine at UNM for almost twenty years and I am tremendously proud of our people and our programs.”
