For every generation, vaccines work. In the last 50 years, vaccines have saved more than 150 million lives, nearly 6 lives every minute. This World Immunization Week, we celebrate the physicians and families who help protect our communities from preventable diseases.

Every patient deserves a trusted physician to be on their side, explaining health conditions, answering questions, and ensuring patients truly understand their care. Physicians bring expertise, empathy, and years of training to the patient-physician relationship – and Medicaid protects a physician’s ability to provide care and ensures access to care for patients who need it most.

When we strengthen Medicaid, we strengthen the patient-physician relationship. More: www.nmms.org/your-care-is-at-our-core/

"New Mexico has faced its share of health care challenges in recent years, but perhaps none has been more urgent than the loss of physicians, many of whom cite the state’s extreme malpractice climate as a major reason for leaving."

The New Mexico Medical Society was proud to facilitate meaningful engagement from doctors across the state that resulted in the passage of HB 99. This legislation will make New Mexico a better place to practice medicine for doctors and result in greater access to healthcare for patients.

More than 1 in 4 physicians reported prior authorization has led to a serious adverse event for a patient in their care. Dr. Bruce A. Scott underscores the importance of keeping treatment decisions between a patient and a physician in a recent testimonial.

“The patients and the physicians work together to develop a plan, and they know what is best for them. The insurance company should not be inserting themselves into that relationship.”

"No single issue has driven more physicians out of New Mexico — or discouraged more from coming — than our medical malpractice environment. For years, the liability climate here was among the most hostile in the country."

Annie Jung, Executive Director of the New Mexico Medical Society (NMMS), recapped the historic wins from this year's legislative session, highlighting the essential work physicans provide for New Mexico's residents. Medical malpractice reform would not have been possible without support from the Governor and bill sponsors and the long-term work by the NMMS.
