According to the AMA, 89% of national voters agree that doctors should be central to treatment decisions and care. Doctors want to work with patients to give both personal and physical attention to every part of their health care needs, instead of being stuck behind a computer screen or on the phone with insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, or the government.

In 2021, 2,892 primary care physicians were licensed in New Mexico, yet only 1,649 were actively practicing in the state. Out-of-state doctors (842) and non-practicing physicians (401) highlight the workforce challenges. With a net loss of 69 PCPs, many communities face gaps in access to care.

NMMS is committed to strengthening the primary care workforce to ensure all New Mexicans receive timely, high-quality healthcare.
