The systems patients rely on tomorrow depend on what we choose to support today.

The Dr. Michael P. Busch First Response Fund turns recognition into action. It ensures that progress in blood safety, patient care, and transfusion research continues without interruption when new challenges emerge. This is about maintaining momentum in a field where delays can have real consequences for patients who depend on a safe and available blood supply.

Through the Vitalant Foundation, support for this fund helps connect research, donor care, and patient need in a way that drives measurable impact. It strengthens the ability to respond to evolving risks while ensuring blood and blood products are available for patients facing trauma, cancer treatment, organ transplants, and chronic blood disorders.

Progress moves because people choose to move it. Be part of what comes next. Donate: vitalant.org/legacy

It’s never too late to come back and you don’t have to save lives alone!

Nicole hadn’t donated blood since college. This time, she came back and encouraged her friend Ed, to donate alongside her.

Life gets busy. Years pass. But patients still need blood every single day. Whether it’s been months or decades, your donation still matters and bringing someone with you can double the impact.

If you’ve donated before, patients need you again. If it’s been a while, bring a friend and donate together.

Some people don’t realize their blood type could be used in almost any emergency until the moment it’s needed.

Only about 7% of people have O-negative blood, yet it’s often the first choice when seconds matter and there’s no time to check a patient’s type.

Isaiah knew he was O-negative. He also knew he was afraid to donate.

“At first, I said no. The idea of it honestly freaked me out.”

That hesitation stuck with him until he realized fear was making the decision.

So he showed up anyway.

“The actual donation ended up being completely seamless. I had spent way more mental energy worrying about it than it deserved.”

What replaced that fear surprised him.

“Instead of fear, I felt this small sense of heroism. It made me feel like a useful citizen doing my part.”

Now it’s something he looks forward to. Something he makes time for.

O-negative donors help make some of the hardest moments in healthcare possible to navigate. But every blood type plays a role in keeping patients cared for and ready when it matters most.

The first face a donor sees can change everything.

When Lori retired, she wasn’t looking to slow down. She was looking for purpose. Now, she’s the one welcoming donors at the door, guiding them through registration, and setting the tone for an experience that feels easy, comfortable, and worth coming back to.

That first interaction matters more than most people realize. It can calm nerves, build trust, and turn a one time donor into someone who shows up again.

Volunteers like Lori keep everything moving behind the scenes and right at the front. From greeting donors to supporting logistics, they help make it possible for every donation to make a meaningful difference.

This Volunteer Appreciation Month, we’re celebrating the people who make giving possible in more ways than one.

The difference between one donation and one hundred is a habit of showing up.

Brandon just reached 100 donations, a milestone built over time through consistency and a real commitment to helping patients who rely on blood every day.

Along the way, Brandon has also stepped up as a Power Red donor. This type of donation collects two units of red blood cells in a single appointment, helping meet the most common need in hospitals for trauma care, surgeries, cancer treatment, and chronic illness support.

Choosing Power Red is one way to make each visit go further. Choosing to come back again and again is what makes a lasting impact.

He didn’t just fight cancer. He depended on strangers to help him survive it.

When Aaron started feeling constant fatigue and heart palpitations, cancer wasn’t the first thought. But the diagnosis was Acute Myeloid Leukemia, and treatment moved fast. Chemotherapy. Multiple platelet transfusions. A temporary remission. Then the cancer returned, and everything came down to a stem cell transplant that ultimately saved his life. Behind every step were donors he will never meet, showing up at exactly the right time.

Today, Aaron is back in the classroom as a full time high school teacher, and he’s not just moving forward, he’s paying it back. As a blood drive coordinator at his school, he’s helping ensure other patients have the same chance he did. That kind of impact starts with someone deciding to donate.

Megan lived her life with purpose — determined to make the world brighter for everyone around her. That purpose didn’t end with her passing. By choosing to be an organ donor, she gave a stranger the gift of more tomorrows.

To honor her legacy of compassion, Megan’s family hosted a blood drive in her memory — a powerful tribute to someone who cared so deeply for others.

Let Megan’s story inspire you. Consider hosting a blood drive to honor someone you love.

A successful transplant doesn’t start in the operating room.

Sarah is a mom who spent four years waiting for a liver transplant. Along the way, blood transfusions became part of her care. Red cells, platelets, and plasma from volunteer donors helped keep her strong through treatment. On the day of her surgery, multiple units supported her procedure alongside the gift of a liver from an organ donor.

Today, Sarah is here because people chose to give. As a parent, that second chance carries even more weight. Now, she shares her story to help others understand how blood and organ donation work together to support patients at every stage of care.
