People who are thinner tend to have more visible veins, but people who are overweight are at a higher risk for developing varicose veins. Medical history review: Discussing symptoms such as leg pain, swelling, heaviness, cramping, itching, or fatigue, as well as family history and prior vein issues.
Physical examination: Visual inspection of the legs while standing to identify bulging, twisted, or discolored veins.
Duplex ultrasound: A painless imaging test that shows blood flow and checks whether vein valves are working properly or allowing blood to flow backward (reflux).

This screening helps confirm the presence and cause of varicose veins and guides appropriate treatment options, from conservative care like compression therapy to minimally invasive procedures.

Campbell, MD, RPVI, RVT, owner and Medical Director, grew up in the Knoxville area and is a graduate of Farragut High School. He earned his medical degree from Quillen College of Medicine and has treated varicose and spider veins exclusively in East Tennessee since 2003. Before opening Tennessee Vein Center in Alcoa in 2010, Dr. Campbell worked with Vein Clinics of America in Turkey Creek.
