You don’t need flashcards to build speech skills: real-life play works too! 🤸‍♀️

A trip to the playground can actually support many of the same language skills kids practice in structured activities. When children play, talk about what they’re doing, and interact with adults, their brains are actively connecting words with real experiences.

Research supports this idea:

• Children often verbalize actions and ideas during play, which helps strengthen expressive language and communication skills. (Smith, 2023)

• Play-based learning environments have been shown to improve oral language, narrative skills, and overall communication development in young children. (Nicolopoulou et al., 2015)

• Research also shows that caregiver language during play helps strengthen how children learn and recognize words and objects. (Schaumlöffel et al., 2023)

The takeaway: everyday moments like climbing, swinging, and sliding at the playground are powerful opportunities for language learning.

Following directions isn’t always about “not listening”, sometimes kids just need clearer, simpler steps 🩵🩷🧡

Try this at home: Get down at their eye level, give one direction at a time, and keep your words short and sweet. Ask them to repeat it back so you know they understood, then celebrate when they follow through 🎉

Small changes in how we say things can make a BIG difference in how kids respond.
