We had a wonderful lecture this morning on “Before the Museum: The Making of the Louvre.” 🖼️✨
It was fascinating to trace the Louvre’s journey from a medieval fortress to a royal residence, then an academy, and finally the world’s most visited museum. We explored its architecture and paintings, and how revolutionary ideas reshaped its purpose—art not as a private luxury for the elite, but as a tool for cultural education, rooted in the values of liberty, equality, and fraternity.
We also looked at the major transformations under Napoleon, when the Louvre expanded to become the greatest museum in Europe, the heroic efforts during World War II to transport and preserve artworks, and the museum’s modern evolution—from the iconic Louvre Pyramid and the Grand Louvre renovation to dramatic moments like the theft of the crown jewels.
Thank you to Tosca for sharing this knowledge with our residents and bringing the history of the Louvre to life. 🏛️🎨
