Did you know that we experience about 400 menstrual cycles in our lifetime?! That’s about 2000 days of our lives - and IMO a good reason alone to know more about how your menstrual cycle works. But even more so, knowing your menstrual cycles is key to understanding your body, hormones, and wellness at the deepest levels.

Unfortunately most of us are taught so little about how this amazing process works that we grow up pretty much in the dark about how to pay attention to and interpret them to find out what’s going on (I started tracking my cycle when I was 15 who’d a known this would become cool someday!). Now, with 40 years, of paying attention to my cycle as part of my deep body knowing, I can say it’s truly been one of the deepest roots of my hormone wisdom and empowerment, helped me not get pregnant, helped me plan my fertility, and now in menopause, has helped me respect my body and all of her evolution over these decades so profoundly.

My newest blog and podcast at the link below is a menstrual cycle 411, a look at very important foundational basics of how your cycle works (it’s more than just your period, in fact ovulation is the queen of the show!) and goes into:
❣️ What a healthy menstrual cycle is
❣️ The 4 phases of your cycle
❣️ Glands + hormones involved in creating your cycle
❣️ Cycle changes from puberty thru menopause
❣️ How to get to know your cycle

The more you know about your own hormones and cycles, the more you can live in harmony with - and even influence what’s happening below the surface, and the more you understand how to tap into this powerful vital sign we have that we can use month after month as a ‘scorecard’ of our total health.

This stuff is so important that I dedicated two chapters of my new book, Hormone Intelligence, to helping you gain a deeper understanding of the language of our cycles and hormones, what’s normal, and what’s not (hint: common and normal aren’t the same thing). And know that it’s powerful and valuable at any age, even if you’re not cycling anymore, because the health of our cycles at any age sets the stage for our health at the next stage.

An easy first step to eating healthy is to include fruits and vegetables at every meal and snack. All forms (fresh, frozen, canned and dried) and all colors count, so go ahead and add color to your plate – and your life.

COVID-19 is spreading across West Central MN, including the communities that Horizon Public Health serves. In particular, Douglas County has seen an increase with 103 active cases as of Tuesday, September 29th. Horizon Public Health is asking everyone to consider the role they can play in helping to reduce the spread of the virus.

As we have increased social, work, school and activity contacts and it is important for each of us to think about how our choices might affect others we come into contact with and come together as a community to protect each other. Every contact you have puts you at higher risk to of exposure to the virus and the potential to spread it to others.

Douglas County data reflects that the majority (65%) of recently confirmed COVID-19 cases are in the 19-65 age range, suggesting an increase of community transmission among working age adults. Five percent of cases were ages 1-12 (early childhood through elementary), 11% of the cases are ages 13-18 (middle and high school). 19% of the cases are over 65. (Specimen collection dates of September 13 through September 26)

Regardless of your risk, it is always important to follow these best practices to help slow the spread:
• Stay home if you are sick
• Get tested if you are sick or recommended to because of close contact
• Wear a face covering or mask
• Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use hand sanitizer
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
• Cover your cough or sneeze and wash your hands
• Avoid gatherings where people aren’t wearing masks and practice social distancing of at least 6 feet in public places
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

Symptoms of COVID-19 to look out for are: fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.

Individuals who have had close contact with someone who was diagnosed with COVID-19 are recommended to limit their activities and remain at home for 14 days after their last exposure, even if they test negative. Individuals who experience COVID-19 symptoms are recommended to stay home for at least 10 days from symptom onset, with at least 1 day being fever-free if fever is present (without taking fever-reducing medications) and symptoms are improving.

We are asking the public if they have additional questions about COVID-19 to talk to your health care provider, Horizon Public Health at 320-763-6018 weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or call the Minnesota Department of Health Helpline at 1-800-657-3504, weekdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit our website for additional links and information at horizonpublichealth.org.
