Dear friends and clients:

As we barrel our way through March, through the Spring awakening of March 21st and ever closer to Easter and Passover, I’m thinking about getting outside and enjoying the beauty and joy of Spring! Sometimes, though, our bodies are not cooperating. Lately, I’ve had a few clients who have wanted to start gardening and walking in the sun, and have had challenges with arthritis, so in this blog, I want to talk about the benefits of massage therapy for arthritis.

There are many different kinds of arthritis, over 100 in fact, and it doesn’t just affect folks getting older. Anyone of any age can be afflicted with the condition, which causes joint inflammation, pain, and stiffness. There’s no known cure, but there are ways of reducing pain and limiting the damage it can cause.

Dear Clients and Friends,

Recently, I have met several people who are struggling with the effects and challenges of fibromyalgia. I also received a call asking whether Mandamine Massage supports clients living with the disorder. My answer was, “Of course!” That conversation made me realize I have never talked about fibromyalgia on the blog before, so this week I wanted to share a bit about the benefits of massage therapy for people dealing with it.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder characterized by widespread pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and brain fog. It is believed to involve the central nervous system misreading pain signals. Living with fibromyalgia can be incredibly challenging, but symptoms can often be managed through a combination of supportive therapies, and massage therapy is one of them.

Massage therapy can be a highly effective, non-drug approach for people with fibromyalgia. Several techniques may be especially helpful, including Swedish massage, myofascial release, and lymphatic drainage, because they can be adapted to avoid aggravating sensitive or tender areas.

Dear clients and friends,

As we adjust to the time change and the flowers begin to bud here in Old Town Alexandria, we at Mandamine Massage are enjoying the scents of spring. I can always tell it’s warming up when I catch one of my favorite smells, mulch. Mulch reminds me of growing things, of change, of positive forward movement. That is part of the beauty of scent, and of so many smells this time of year. They have a powerful way of evoking feeling.

That’s why I want to talk a little about the power of aromatherapy, and why I believe it is such an important part of massage therapy at Mandamine Massage. Head over to my blog to read more. https://www.mandaminemassage.com/s/stories/aromatherapy-and-massage

March’s featured aromatherapy blend is On Guard.

As winter lingers and spring begins to stir, this warming blend was chosen to support immune wellness, encourage clear breathing, and create a protective, comforting atmosphere.

I shared more about the inspiration behind On Guard, the folklore of the “Four Thieves,” and the individual oils that make up this blend on the blog.

Dear clients and friends,

As February is coming to an icy close and March hopefully will bring the first little blossoms, I wanted to look forward to fun in and around Old Town. The ice and snow of the last weeks have made it hard to traverse all the side streets, but now that it’s safer, I thought I’d see what’s on offer for friends and clients (and myself!).

So, what’s happening in Old Town Alexandria this March? Let’s take a look!

Dear clients and friends,

We are coming up on February 14th. For some, it is beautiful and joyful. For others, it can feel lonely. And for still others, it is simply a day to get through. But there is one thing people sometimes forget. No matter how you feel about Valentine’s Day, there is one person everyone should begin by appreciating. You.

All the love you show starts with yourself. You are worthy. You deserve good things. You deserve care.

What I love most about Valentine’s Day is not the cards or flowers or expectations. It is the invitation to turn love inward. To celebrate ourselves. It is a beautiful moment to pause and offer yourself the same warmth you so freely give to others.

Have you ever stood in front of a mirror and said, “I love you”? Every day is a good day to do that. Valentine’s Day is an especially powerful one.

While the custom of giving a valentine has lasted for centuries, the importance of self love is timeless.
There are many meaningful ways to show yourself love. Practice self compassion. Set boundaries. Choose activities that bring joy. Forgive yourself. Replace negative self talk with words that uplift. And one of the most powerful ways to care for yourself is to prioritize your physical and mental health.

You know where I am going with this. Massage therapy.

Scheduling a massage for yourself is an act of love. It says your body matters. Your peace matters. Your well being matters. It is a conscious decision to nourish yourself.

Of course, massage therapy gift certificates also make beautiful Valentine’s gifts for friends, family, and that special someone in your life. If you would like to give the gift of rest and renewal, contact Mandamine Massage of Old Town Alexandria. It truly is a gift that keeps on giving.

But first, remember this. You are the special someone in your own life. You are wonderful. You are worthy. Celebrate yourself. Take care of yourself. As the classic L’Oréal Paris line reminds us, “Because you’re worth it.”

Big, joyful love to you all,
Amanda

Dear clients and friends,

February arrives with Valentine’s Day, a celebration of love that has roots far older than greeting cards and chocolates. One of its predecessors, the Roman festival of Lupercalia, honored Pan and Juno, deities associated with love, fertility, purification, and health. At its core, the tradition was less about romance and more about renewal, clearing away what no longer served, and supporting well-being.

With that spirit in mind, I wanted February’s featured essential oil blend to reflect purification, uplift, and gentle restoration.

Each month at Mandamine Massage of Old Town Alexandria, I select an essential oil or blend to support the season and the needs I see most often in my clients. After some research and reflection, I chose doTERRA’s Arise Enlightening Blend. It is a blend I return to again and again for its ability to uplift the mood, ease stress, and create a sense of clarity and calm, even during challenging or demanding times.

Dear clients and friends,

Today a good friend texted me a picture of her freshly shoveled driveway and walkway with the caption, “Everything hurts.” I think we can all relate.

Here in Northern Virginia, and at Mandamine Massage of Old Town Alexandria, we just weathered a bit of a snow-apocalypse, and many of us are still digging ourselves out. That includes you, my clients and friends. This makes it the perfect time to talk about shoveling snow and massage therapy.

If there was ever a moment when massage therapy can make a real difference, it’s right after a storm like this. Shoveling snow puts intense, unfamiliar strain on the body, and massage therapy is one of the best recovery tools to help restore balance and support healing.

Even if you exercise regularly, lift weights, and do all the right things to stay strong, shoveling snow challenges muscles in ways we do not often use. It commonly leads to soreness or pain in the back, shoulders, neck, and arms. Massage therapy helps reduce muscle tension, improve circulation, and increase flexibility, all of which support recovery. Even a single session can provide noticeable relief.

Dear clients and friends,

This week for our Mandamine Massage Therapy of Old Town Alexandria, our blog is a fun one! And that’s because I thought I’d check into what “the world” is saying are the hottest trends in massage therapy, and which of them we here at Mandamine Massage are either already doing, or decided are not for us. I think you’ll find it as interesting as I did! Read more on my blog, https://www.mandaminemassage.com/s/stories/massage-therapy-trends-for-2026

Dear clients and friends,

You know that expression, “May you live in interesting times”? Interesting times can be hard on every part of us, our bodies, minds, and spirits. Life can become challenging very quickly, sometimes when we least expect it. When that happens, sleep is often the first thing to suffer.

Recently, several clients have mentioned their Apple Watches confirming just two or three hours of sleep a night. That kind of exhaustion takes a toll. So what can be done?

I may sound repetitive here, but massage therapy truly can help. Whatever we are moving through emotionally or physically, massage therapy supports deeper rest, calms the nervous system, and helps restore balance. Head to my blog to learn how:

Dear friends and clients,

Happy New Year. As we step into 2026, I hope you are focusing your hopes and intentions on what brings you joy, balance, and a sense of ease. I hold all the best in my thoughts for you as this new year begins.

As winter settles in, I want to talk about something that affects many of us, sometimes quietly and sometimes quite strongly, seasonal affective disorder, often called SAD.

During the winter months, many people notice shifts in mood that tend to begin as the days grow shorter and ease as the light returns. Feeling low, unmotivated, or emotionally flat during this time is more common than many people realize.

Symptoms of SAD can include:
Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks
Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism
Irritability, frustration, or restlessness
Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness
Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities
Decreased energy, fatigue, or feeling slowed down
Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions
Changes in sleep or appetite, or unplanned weight changes
Physical aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive discomfort without a clear cause

Millions of people experience SAD, and it occurs more often in women than in men. Living in this region places us somewhere in the middle, not as extreme as farther north, but still noticeably affected by reduced daylight compared to sunnier climates. Which brings us to an important question. Can massage therapy help when we are feeling low during the darker months?

Absolutely, head over to my blog to learn more.
