Your immune system is designed to protect you from viruses and bacteria. Autoimmunity occurs when that defense system mistakenly attacks your own organs or tissues. 😢

Celiac disease is one example. While genetics matter, research shows viral exposure may also influence risk. Only a small percentage of people with celiac disease are formally diagnosed, even though it affects many Americans. Studies suggest certain viral infections may increase the likelihood of developing gluten and gut related autoimmune responses.

When your body fights an infection, it produces antibodies. In some cases, those antibodies may also react with your own cells if they look similar to the invading pathogen. This process may help explain why infections are linked to autoimmunity.

Research has connected several infections with autoimmune conditions, including 😯:
