The Physician & Midwife Collaborative Practice was born out of the notion that as medicine and technology advances, “care” should still be the foundation of providing medical care to women. We focus on providing compassion, education and support in tandem with the best medical course of action for the individual. By bringing together board-certified OB/GYNs and midwives, we are able to provide our patients with high-touch care in combination with the latest medical technology. This may translate to planning for a natural childbirth with a first-time mother or creating a comprehensive treatment plan, including exercise for a woman who is struggling with menopause. We also do our best to keep this level of care accessible, by offering multiple providers, four office locations, extensive office hours, and 24/7 on-site staff at Inova Alexandria Hospital. In order to respond efficiently and accurately to your needs, we also maintain electronic medical records and offer centralized support staff who can access your lab results and quickly set appointments. Understanding the different types of mammograms can help you stay proactive about your breast health.
Regular screening mammograms are recommended for women with no symptoms and average risk for breast cancer, starting at age 40.
Diagnostic mammograms take a closer look when symptoms or changes appear, or there is a result in a screening mammogram that requires additional investigation.
Remember - an abnormal mammogram doesn’t always mean cancer. On occasion, there may be a false positive result or a benign condition that is discovered during a mammogram.
Talk to your healthcare provider about when to start screenings and what’s right for you. Early detection can save lives.

Dr. Denise Cunningham brings decades of OB/GYN experience and a unique global background to Physicians & Midwives. She earned her medical degree from Georgetown University and completed her residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii.

In this video, our prenatal genetic counselor, Jennifer Razak, MGC, CGC, explains how she helps patients understand their family history, assess genetic risks, and make informed decisions about their care.
Genetics can feel complex — but you don’t have to navigate it alone. Jennifer is here to guide you every step of the way.

Big news in menopause care!
The FDA has removed outdated "black-box" warning requirements from many hormone replacement therapies, opening the door to more women safely treating menopausal symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, bone loss, and more.
These changes are based on numerous studies that show significant benefit for women below age 60, in reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease and bone fracture, in addition to improved quality of life through effective treatment of menopause symptoms.
If you've been unsure about HRT, now is a great time to talk with your provider.
