Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Program-ATCC

Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Program-ATCC This page was created for current students in the SLPA program at ATCC and for people who are interested in the program.

Speech-Language Pathology Assistants (SLPAs) are trained to work under the supervision of licensed and certified Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP), helping both children and adults with communication disorders to improve their speech and language skills. Under the supervision and direction of the Speech-Language Pathologist, SLPAs may assist with speech-language screenings, implement ongoing treatment and therapy plans, document client progress, and assist the SLP during assessment and treatment. The Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Associate in Applied Science at Alexandria Technical & Community College is a two year, 60 credit degree that prepares students to enter the workforce as Speech-Language Pathology Assistants. Courses incorporate industry topics such as speech development, phonetics, voice and diction, communication disorders, child development, and alternative communication. The program includes clinical experiences which provide students the opportunity to work alongside a Speech-Language Pathologist in a real work environment.

5 Reasons Your Assistant Should Be ASHA Certified

Did you know that an ASHA-certified assistant can make your life as an audiologist or SLP easier? ASHA Assistant Certification highlights your assistants' skills and knowledge—and clearly defines their roles as a part of your team. Consider these reasons to encourage your assistant to become certified:
Allows you to practice at the "top of your license." You can spend time with the more complicated cases and delegate appropriate services to your assistant.

Showcases your assistant as meeting a uniform standard. Certified assistants will have met specific educational and knowledge/skill levels in order to be certified.

Lightens your administrative workload. You can pass on routine tasks to your assistant so you can spend more time with clients.

Instills confidence and peace of mind. A certified assistant understands their role. The ASHA Assistants program created two important resources—the ASHA Assistant Code of Conduct and the ASHA Assistants Scope of Practice—that establish guidelines for assistants' practice. These guiding documents enable open communication and teamwork where everyone understands their roles and responsibilities and adheres to the policies and practices stipulated within the documents.

Demonstrates commitment to patients, students, and clients. Having certified assistants demonstrates that your team is dedicated to providing the highest levels of service.
