You might notice someone new around Oakcrest Funeral Services in the coming weeks. Meet Tommy Geelan, a Mortuary Science student in his final semester at DMACC. He’ll be helping out at funerals and behind the scenes to keep things running smoothly.

Tommy grew up on a farm just outside of Ruthven. He was first exposed to funeral service as a young student while serving as an altar server for funeral masses. After the masses, he would stay to help his mom serve meals to families and friends. “Participating in funerals at a young age helped me realize the importance of being there for families during an emotional time in their lives,” he says. “Once I entered the mortuary science program, I quickly realized this profession was a calling for me.”

When he’s not studying or working, Tommy enjoys sports, golfing, and cheering on Notre Dame football.

Tommy says he looks forward to learning from the Oakcrest team and getting to know the community. If you see him around, be sure to say hello!

Planning your funeral ahead of time is one of the most loving things you can do for your family. When the time comes, they'll already know exactly what you wanted and can focus on supporting each other instead of making difficult decisions while they're grieving. We can walk through the steps with you and make preplanning simple.

When you’re ready, give us call at 515-295-3731.

Have you considered who you'll trust to know your funeral choices?

Your family will face some big decisions when they're planning your celebration of life. Should they choose burial or cremation? What kind of service would you want? Would you prefer your favorite hymn or that song you always sang along to in the car?

They might second-guess every choice if they don't know your preferences. But when you've shared these thoughts with someone you trust, they can guide the family with confidence and know they're honoring exactly what mattered to you.

(And while you're having that conversation, ask those you love what they'd want, too.)

Who in your life will you trust to carry your voice forward?

Our Family, Here for Your Family

Welcome to Oakcrest Funeral Services. Our funeral home has been a family owned and operated business since 1923. Families have been placing their trust in us for generations, and we are proud to continue that tradition. Owners, Vic Garry (3rd generation funeral director) and Brian Schaaf (2nd generation funeral director) continue the legacy their fathers and original partners have built. We take great pride in serving Algona and our surrounding communities, and truly treat every family like our own. Outstanding service has always been, and always will be our number one priority.

Through the years, we have added several team members that specialize in funeral service, pre-arrangement, aftercare, monuments and memorial items. We invite you to learn more about us, our services and the resources we have to provide you with peace of mind that your family will be our top priority.

We are proud of our tradition and continue the same mission of our founding partners – to treat each funeral with the utmost respect and commit ourselves to helping families honor the memories.

~ Brian Schaaf and Vic Garry
