Funerals can feel like a lot for kids, and we always make sure there's a quiet room where they can take a break when everything gets overwhelming. Sometimes a child just needs to step away from all the people and tears, maybe color for a few minutes or just sit somewhere peaceful until they're ready to come back.

We've learned that having this option helps kids handle the whole day better. Plenty of adults end up using that quiet space for their own grief breaks too, and we're always happy to point families toward it when they need a moment to regroup.

Maybe you’ve been unsure whether a funeral is needed, especially when life feels upside down. The truth is a large formal service isn't always necessary. Even a brief, simple gathering helps people come together, making those early days a little easier. We’ll walk through the options with you, work within your budget, and help you choose what makes sense for your family.

Some days carry a mix of emotions, and that’s part of grief. Feelings shift and change, and however today looks is part of the process. Be kind to yourself through it all.

What setting feels most like home to you? 🏡

The place you choose for your service shapes how the day feels. Each setting creates its own tone, which guides how people gather and remember. Our funeral home offers structure and support when your family needs it most. Churches and places of worship connect your service to your faith community and the traditions you value. Family property makes things intimate and personal, while an outdoor space under the trees might feel more like you than any building ever could.

The place should match who you were and what your family needs to say goodbye well. When you tell them where you picture your service happening, you help them create something that feels true to you instead of guessing what you might have wanted.

"We don’t have a cemetery plot. What do we do?"
Families ask us this often, and if you haven’t chosen a plot yet, you’re not alone. When the time comes, we’ll help you start the process and point you in the right direction. You’ll be able to look at what’s available, ask questions, and make a choice that feels right for your family. What matters most is that you don’t have to figure it out on your own. 💙

Our Family, Here for Your Family

Welcome to Oakcrest Funeral Services. Our funeral home has been a family owned and operated business since 1923. Families have been placing their trust in us for generations, and we are proud to continue that tradition. Owners, Vic Garry (3rd generation funeral director) and Brian Schaaf (2nd generation funeral director) continue the legacy their fathers and original partners have built. We take great pride in serving Algona and our surrounding communities, and truly treat every family like our own. Outstanding service has always been, and always will be our number one priority.

Through the years, we have added several team members that specialize in funeral service, pre-arrangement, aftercare, monuments and memorial items. We invite you to learn more about us, our services and the resources we have to provide you with peace of mind that your family will be our top priority.

We are proud of our tradition and continue the same mission of our founding partners – to treat each funeral with the utmost respect and commit ourselves to helping families honor the memories.

~ Brian Schaaf and Vic Garry
