✨Theme: Observing the Breath
Using the power of your breath to unlock your practice.
✨Inspiration
Let your breath be deep and rhythmic, without gasping or panting—no broken starts & stops, no ragged edges. -–Geshe Michael Roach
…steady observation alone is enough to bring about unforced changes in the breath’s shape and texture. Indeed, no form of conscious, deliberate effort can make the breath as soft and unhurried as it becomes spontaneously through sustained mindfulness. And as respiration grows inconceivably spacious and subtle, it ceases to be a suitable environment for agitated mental states. —The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali
✨Practice
Sample Sequence
• Cobra
• Child’s
• Easy Pose
• Seated Spinal Twist
• Bridge
• Supine Twist
• Reclined Bound Angle
• Supine Lotus
The practice begins with observing your breath. You should have conscious control over the part of your body you are using to breathe with. Concentrating on the space just below the ribs where the diaphragm can be found. This will increase oxygen intake. Certain poses will invite you observe your breath in other areas of the body. Twist will constrict the diaphragm and send more oxygen to your lungs. This keeps your lungs healthy.
Breath can be the hardest part of your practice at first but as you become more aware and focused on your breath you can control the rate and rhythm needed for each pose and your ability to sustain it as well as settle the fluctuating mind. This is how the breath can unlock a deeper conscious yoga practice.
