Welcome to our new Ask a Provider series! Each month, we’ll take a common parent question and break it down into simple, evidence-based guidance.

This month’s question:
"When should my child stop using a pacifier?"

Most pediatricians recommend starting to limit pacifier use around age 1 and trying to stop completely by age 2–3. Prolonged pacifier use can sometimes affect dental alignment and oral development, especially once permanent teeth begin developing.

Pacifiers can still be helpful in infancy for soothing and sleep, but as children grow, it’s a good idea to gradually reduce use.

Helpful tips for parents:
• Begin limiting pacifier use to nap time and bedtime only
• Offer comfort items like a stuffed animal or blanket instead
• Create a consistent bedtime routine to help with the transition
• Use positive reinforcement when your child goes without it

Every child transitions differently, but with patience and consistency, most toddlers adjust well.

From all of us at Lone Star Kids Care, we’re always here to support your child’s healthy development.

Reading with your child each day helps support language development, learning, and imagination 📚. Even a few minutes of reading together can make a lasting difference in a child’s development.

Benefits of reading with kids include:
• Stronger language and vocabulary skills 🗣️
• Improved attention and listening skills
• Better preparation for school and learning 🎓
• Stronger parent-child bonding ❤️

Pediatric experts often encourage parents to read with children daily, even starting in infancy. Talking about pictures, asking simple questions, and letting kids turn the pages all help make reading interactive and fun.

At Lone Star Kids Care, we encourage families to make reading part of their daily routine.

Wearing a helmet is one of the most important ways to protect children from serious head injuries while biking, skating, or riding scooters 🚲🛴.

According to pediatric safety experts, helmets can reduce the risk of head injury by up to 85%. Children should wear a helmet every time they ride, even for short trips.

Tips for proper helmet safety:
• The helmet should sit level on the head, not tilted back
• It should cover the forehead and sit about two finger-widths above the eyebrows
• The straps should form a “V” shape under the ears
• The chin strap should be snug but comfortable

Modeling safe habits as parents and caregivers helps children understand that helmet use is non-negotiable.

Children grow and develop at their own pace, but developmental milestones help pediatricians track important stages in a child’s growth.

Milestones generally fall into a few key areas:
• Motor skills – rolling, crawling, walking, and coordination 🚶
• Language skills – babbling, saying words, and forming sentences 🗣️
• Social skills – smiling, interacting with others, and emotional responses 😊
• Cognitive skills – learning, problem-solving, and understanding the world around them 🧩

Regular well-child visits allow pediatricians to monitor development, answer parent questions, and identify any concerns early. Early support can make a big difference if delays are present.

At Lone Star Kids Care, we’re here to help support your child’s healthy growth every step of the way.

Staying hydrated helps support a child’s energy, concentration, digestion, and temperature regulation. Children often don’t recognize thirst early, so it’s helpful to encourage regular water intake throughout the day.

General hydration guidance used by pediatric organizations suggests:

• Ages 1–3: about 4 cups (32 oz) of fluids per day
• Ages 4–8: about 5 cups (40 oz) per day
• Ages 9–13: about 7–8 cups (56–64 oz) per day
• Ages 14–18: about 8–11 cups (64–88 oz) per day

These totals include water and other healthy fluids, but water should be the primary drink. Needs may increase with sports, outdoor play, fever, or hot weather ☀️.

Tips to help kids stay hydrated:
💧 Send a reusable water bottle to school
⚽ Encourage drinking water before and after sports
🍉 Offer water-rich foods like watermelon, oranges, and cucumbers
🚫 Limit sugary drinks and soda

Building healthy hydration habits early supports overall health and physical activity.

Outdoor play is an important part of a child’s physical and mental development 🌳☀️. Time outside helps children stay active while supporting healthy growth and learning.

Benefits of outdoor play include:
• Stronger muscles and bones through running, climbing, and movement 🏃‍♂️
• Improved coordination and balance
• Better mood and reduced stress 😊
• More creativity and imagination during unstructured play

Health experts recommend that children get daily physical activity, and outdoor play is one of the best ways to encourage it. Even simple activities like playing at the park, riding a bike, or exploring nature can support healthy habits that last a lifetime.

Knowing how to report suspected child abuse is essential in protecting children.

If you suspect a child is being harmed, here’s what you can do:

~ 📞 Call 911 if the child is in immediate danger.
~ 📲 Contact Child Protective Services (CPS): Each state has a hotline to report abuse or neglect. In Texas, you can call 1-800-252-5400 or report online at txabusehotline.org.
~ 📝 Provide detailed information when reporting—details like the child’s name, age, location, and what you witnessed help authorities respond quickly and effectively.

You can also contact our office if you’re unsure what to do or have concerns about a child’s well-being. We’re here to help.

Good vision plays a major role in how children learn, read, and explore the world. Because kids may not realize their vision is blurry, vision problems can sometimes go unnoticed.

Watch for signs that your child may be having trouble seeing:
• Frequent squinting
• Sitting very close to screens or books 📱📚
• Frequent headaches or eye rubbing
• Difficulty reading or focusing in school

Regular pediatric visits and vision screenings help detect problems early so they can be treated before they affect learning and development. If you notice any changes in your child’s vision or behavior, it’s always a good idea to talk with your pediatrician.

Handwashing is one of the easiest and most effective ways to prevent illness 🧼🫧. Teaching kids proper handwashing habits can help reduce the spread of germs that cause colds, flu, stomach viruses, and other infections.

Encourage children to wash their hands:
• Before eating 🍎
• After using the bathroom 🚻
• After coughing or sneezing 🤧
• After playing outside or touching pets 🛝🐶

Use soap and water for at least 20 seconds- about the time it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice. Don’t forget to scrub between fingers, under nails, and the backs of hands.

Building strong hygiene habits early helps keep kids, families, and classrooms healthier.
