Good vision plays a major role in how children learn, read, and explore the world. Because kids may not realize their vision is blurry, vision problems can sometimes go unnoticed.

Watch for signs that your child may be having trouble seeing:
• Frequent squinting
• Sitting very close to screens or books 📱📚
• Frequent headaches or eye rubbing
• Difficulty reading or focusing in school

Regular pediatric visits and vision screenings help detect problems early so they can be treated before they affect learning and development. If you notice any changes in your child’s vision or behavior, it’s always a good idea to talk with your pediatrician.

Handwashing is one of the easiest and most effective ways to prevent illness 🧼🫧. Teaching kids proper handwashing habits can help reduce the spread of germs that cause colds, flu, stomach viruses, and other infections.

Encourage children to wash their hands:
• Before eating 🍎
• After using the bathroom 🚻
• After coughing or sneezing 🤧
• After playing outside or touching pets 🛝🐶

Use soap and water for at least 20 seconds- about the time it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice. Don’t forget to scrub between fingers, under nails, and the backs of hands.

Building strong hygiene habits early helps keep kids, families, and classrooms healthier.

March is National Nutrition Month 🥦🍎- a great reminder to focus on healthy eating habits that support your child’s growth, brain development, and immune health.

A balanced plate for kids should include:
• Fruits & vegetables for vitamins and fiber
• Whole grains like oatmeal or whole-wheat bread for steady energy
• Protein such as eggs, beans, yogurt, chicken, or fish to support growth
• Healthy fats like avocado or nuts for brain development

A few simple habits that help:
👩‍👧 Eat meals together as a family when possible
🥗 Offer a variety of foods (it can take multiple tries for kids to like something new)
💧 Encourage water instead of sugary drinks
🍎 Keep healthy snacks available

Healthy nutrition in childhood helps kids grow strong now and supports lifelong health. If you have concerns about picky eating or nutrition, our pediatric team is here to help.

Kids don’t always have the words to say “I’m anxious”- their bodies often show it instead 🤍🧠

In children, anxiety and emotional stress commonly present as physical symptoms, not worries or fears spoken out loud. These symptoms are real and distressing for kids- not “attention-seeking” or imagined.

Common physical signs of anxiety can include:
• Frequent stomach aches or nausea
• Headaches
• Trouble falling or staying asleep
• School avoidance or sudden reluctance to separate
• Fatigue, irritability, or changes in appetite

According to pediatric guidance, including from the American Academy of Pediatrics, early recognition and support can reduce the risk of anxiety becoming chronic or interfering with learning, sleep, and social development.

When emotional well-being is supported early, children build healthier coping patterns that last into adolescence and adulthood.

Nighttime bedwetting is very common in childhood 🌙💙

Studies show that up to 15% of 5-year-olds experience nighttime bedwetting, and many children continue to have occasional accidents as they develop bladder control. This is typically related to neurologic and bladder maturation, sleep patterns, and genetics — not behavior, motivation, or parenting.

Most children naturally outgrow bedwetting with time, patience, and reassurance. Pediatricians focus on a child’s overall development, daytime bladder control, and emotional well-being rather than isolated nighttime accidents.

Helpful approaches include:
• Keeping routines calm and predictable
• Avoiding punishment or shame
• Offering reassurance and emotional support
• Celebrating dry nights without pressure

A supportive environment helps children feel safe as their bodies continue to mature.

Picky eating is a normal part of development — especially in toddlers 🍎🥦

As children gain independence, it’s common for them to become more selective with foods. Research shows that many toddlers need 10–15 exposures to a new food before they’re willing to try or accept it. This is about familiarity — not failure.

Helpful strategies for families include:
• Re-offering foods without pressure
• Eating together and modeling balanced meals
• Keeping mealtimes calm and predictable

Pressure-free meals support healthier relationships with food and better long-term eating habits.

At Lone Star Kids Care, your child’s health and safety come first.

We follow the American Academy of Pediatrics vaccine schedule because it is evidence-based, widely supported, and designed to protect children from preventable diseases.

If you ever have questions about vaccines, we welcome the conversation. Let’s talk at your next visit.

Kids can become dehydrated much faster than adults 💧👶

Because children have smaller fluid reserves and higher metabolic needs, even mild illness — like fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or poor appetite — can lead to dehydration more quickly than parents expect. Early signs are often subtle and easy to miss.

Watch for signs of dehydration:
• Fewer wet diapers or fewer bathroom trips
• Dark yellow or strong-smelling urine
• Dry lips, mouth, or tongue
• Fatigue, irritability, or low energy
• Dizziness or decreased tears when crying

During illness, hydration is just as important as medication. Offering small, frequent sips of fluids (water, oral rehydration solutions, or age-appropriate drinks) is often more effective than large amounts at once.

If your child is refusing fluids, vomiting repeatedly, or showing signs of worsening dehydration, reach out to your pediatrician for guidance. Early support can prevent complications.
