A lot of people come into therapy thinking, “I just need to change how I react.”
Be more patient.
Communicate better.
Stop shutting down.
Stop overthinking.
And while those goals make sense… they usually don’t stick for long.
Not because you’re failing — but because you’re trying to change a pattern you don’t fully understand yet.
The way you show up today didn’t come out of nowhere.
It was shaped by the environment you grew up in.
What emotions were allowed.
How conflict was handled.
What got you attention, love, or approval....or what didn’t.
Over time, your brain built patterns based on that environment — patterns that probably made a lot of sense then. The problem is… a lot of those same patterns are still running now, even when they don’t fit your life anymore.
That’s why change can feel so frustrating.
You’re trying to override something you haven’t fully seen.
Real, lasting change starts with awareness.
Not judgment. Not “fixing.” Just understanding.
If you’ve been feeling stuck in the same reactions, same dynamics, same internal loops… start with those three questions. See what stirs.
If you want more insight like this, Dr. Jen’s Weekly Reset breaks this (and so many more relatable topics) down in a way that actually makes sense in real life.
And if you’re ready to go deeper, our counselors can help you understand why you act, feel, and think the way you do.
