If you or someone in your household depends on electric-powered medical equipment (like ventilators, specialty mattresses, oxygen concentrators, dialysis machines, power chairs, or other life-sustaining devices), you may qualify for Critical Care or Chronic Condition designation with your electric utility in Texas. This designation provides additional protections like advance notice of planned outages and extra safeguards against disconnection due to non-payment — though it does not guarantee uninterrupted power.
The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) has an official Critical Care/Chronic Condition Customer Application that must be completed by you and your physician and submitted to your utility provider:

To complete the form:
• Fill out the customer section.
• Give it to your doctor to certify that electricity is essential for health and safety.
• Your physician must submit the signed form directly to your Transmission & Distribution Utility (TDU).
Important notes:
✔ You remain responsible for paying your electric bill.
✔ Designation helps with communication and protections but doesn’t guarantee power during outages.
✔ Each utility handles the review and approval of your application.
