Youth sports should be a place where every kid belongs. Not just the fastest, the strongest, or the most coordinated — but the kid who needs a little extra time to process instructions, the one who gets overwhelmed by loud crowds, the one who moves differently, thinks differently, or experiences the world differently.
When we talk about what we want kids to take away from their early experiences in sports, sportsmanship always has to come first. How we treat our teammates. How we respond to mistakes — our own and others’. How we show up for the kid who just needs a little more encouragement.
Coaches, parents, and teammates all shape that environment. And when we make the effort to be truly inclusive — not just tolerant, but genuinely welcoming — we’re not lowering the bar. We’re raising it. 🙌
Because the lessons learned on a field at age 7 echo for a lifetime. Let’s make sure those lessons are about belonging, not exclusion.
💬 I want to hear from you in the comments: What’s ONE thing you think should be different about youth sports? Maybe it’s how coaches are trained. Maybe it’s the pressure to specialize too young. Maybe it’s something you witnessed or experienced firsthand. Drop it below — this conversation matters. ⬇️
