We all know that the joy and magic of the season is thanks to parents - but this year more than ever, moms need our help to make the magic of the season happen!
Every year, the practice chooses a family to help "clear the list" with for Christmas, a local family who needs our community of mothers to help with the endless list of items in need for - some toys, warm clothes and more.
At AWOH, we have several families we see pro bono or low fee who we support, and this year we have a lovely mother with a daughter with disabilities that Kara has the pleasure of seeing, in extra need this year. Help us make Christmas magical for these two survivors of domestic violence who bravely left a bad situation for a new life 🩷 shop the wishlist "Moms Make the Magic" in our bio and gift her and her daughter some gifts for the season so she can focus on funds for basic necessities!

✨ Supporting Kids Through Grief During the Holidays ✨
The holidays can stir up big feelings for kids — especially those grieving the loss of a loved one or adjusting to changes like divorce or shifting family traditions. While this season is often wrapped in joy, it can also bring reminders of what (or who) is missing.
💛 Ways to help:
• Keep routines as consistent as possible — predictability helps kids feel safe.
• Invite them to share memories or create new traditions in honor of loved ones.
• Name and normalize feelings: “It’s okay to feel sad and happy at the same time.”
• Offer choices — some kids want to participate in everything, others need breaks.
• Model your own emotions; kids learn that grief is love carried forward.
However grief shows up, remember: children don’t need perfect holidays — they need present, compassionate adults.
🕯️ This season, let’s hold space for both joy and longing.

I know this title might bring up strong feelings — and that’s valid. Autism and the current administration bring up many voices and perspectives when they're on the table, especially together.

But for me, this conversation is deeply personal. I grew up as a sibling to someone with profound autism, and today I sit with parents of newly diagnosed children who are grieving, questioning, and blaming themselves for things far beyond their control. As a perinatal therapist, mother and advocate, the narrative that continues to subtlety blame mothers (women) when it comes to diagnoses like autism, is not only factually incorrect it is damaging.

The truth is: we don’t need more blame. We need compassion. Understanding. Inclusion. And funding that reflects the reality of what these families live every single day.
I’m honored to contribute to a piece that challenges stigma and centers what truly matters — supporting families, not shaming them.

And no, this does not mean I am against understanding autism further or ways to support individuals - it means I'm in favor of doing so in ways that simultaneously foster value for the lives of autistics and their families by funding the programs they need to thrive

Thank you Jaclyn Greenberg for allowing me to contribute to your piece and for your views on motherhood and raising disabled kids - we need you more than ever, and CNN for having these necessary perspectives in the fold as well as my publicist and dear friend Juliana Fondacado for believing my voice and brain have enough weight to be included in these conversations 🫶🏻

Some people are preparing to spend the first holidays without a loved one.

And while everyone else is decorating trees and planning dinners,
they’re quietly trying to figure out how to make it through a season that suddenly feels different.

Grief hits harder this time of year.
The songs feel heavier.
The memories feel sharper.
The silence feels louder.

So if this season doesn’t feel magical for you, that’s okay.
You don’t have to force joy.
You don’t have to pretend you’re fine.
You’re allowed to feel it all…the love, the loss, the longing.

And if your world is still full of the people you love?
Cherish them.
Say the thing.
Give the hug.
Take the picture.

Because someone out there is wishing for just one more holiday with their person.
