Daily I am asked about our platform. “Are you cloud or server based?” My answer is that we are server based and would not ever recommend that you put your valuable data on someone else’s server. Is the cloud server in the USA? Prove it. Is it safe? Prove it. If cloud platform goes out of business where are your records? If software company fails where are your records? If you change your mind? Where are your records?

So the question of the day for all of you with thoughts of the cloud is:

Where is your data?

Think about that for a bit and soon you’ll begin to see the value in owning your system and having your data in your location on your server.

Back the data up to Carbonite so a copy is in the cloud? Absolutely, but the originals stay in your possession.

Don’t believe me? Ask Smart Cloud users. Ask any number of customers who foolishly placed their faith in a cloud company that failed.

Server based is the best and safest in the long term.

In my 34 years I have seen MANY companies fail so don’t trust anyone who says that they will be here for the foreseeable future because a healthy percentage of them will fail. If your company has been around less than 10 years it has a lot to prove yet regarding staying power.

I also warn my prospects about the very real possibility that your software “company” could be a single person writing code. It is more true than not true among the newbies.
