Lehigh Valley Center for Independent Living (LVCIL) attended the ribbon cutting on Sept. 13 for Minsi Lake's Adaptive Kayak Launch and Fishing Piers with representatives from Northampton County government, the county's Parks & Recreation Department, Friends of Minsi Lake, Team River Runner, BoardSafe Docks, and some state and county officials. For the project, the officials, along with the company BoardSafe Docks, consulted people with disabilities to design and install a kayak launch that can be used by people with mobility issues so they too can get onto the water and enjoy the lake. In addition, the two adaptive fishing piers are located on the other side of the lake. The end result is a recreational asset in Upper Mount Bethel, Northampton County, that's inclusive for all!

[TEXT] Two staff members from Lehigh Valley Center for Independent Living (LVCIL) visited Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association in Berks County on April 13 to help evaluate the accessibility of their planned new sign locations, with a focus on accessible height and distance in the native plant garden. Here, Todd Bauman, director of Stewardship at Hawk Mountain, speaks with Bob Amelio, Accessibility Supports Coordinator at LVCIL. Students from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania were also there working on a braille project for the signage at Hawk Mountain.

Proper Signage is important in conveying correct information to visitors, consumers, and guests.

The International Symbol of Accessibility (ISA), is one of the most recognizable symbols in the world. In 2009 it was redesigned to emphasize motion. The Accessible Icon Project is an ongoing work of design activism. Although the redesign has not been adopted universally as the new ISA, LVCIL / AccessCheck actively encourages its use where possible. The ADA states that variations of the ISA are permissible, however it's best to check your local codes / regulations before using the new icon.

ACCENT Signage Systems, Inc. offers a reliable reference guide: http://www.accentsignage.com/wp-content/uploads/ADA-Quick-Reference.pdf.

If you are looking for a sign for your facility http://www.myparkingsign.com has a large assortment of proper signs.

If you have questions about signage, or want to schedule a free ADA consultation, contact Bob Amelio at 610-770-9781 ext. 111 or
bamelio@lvcil.org.
