Luke's Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Residency is an American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE) accredited post graduate program. The dual cohort (January and July) year long program is designed to enhance orthopaedic physical therapy clinical practice through academic coursework, one on one mentoring time, and interprofessional collaboration. Over the last few weeks, our Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residents have been learning about evaluation and treatment of the wrist and hand. Last week, they had the opportunity to make custom wrist and hand splints which are useful in treating certain injuries or after surgery to limit motion and allow for optimal healing.

This week our Upper Extremity Fellowship team focused on fabricating and instructing patients in the use of radial palsy splints - a cornerstone in restoring function and independence.

🔧 Fabrication: Fellows learned step-by-step construction of a dynamic radial palsy splint designed to support wrist extension and optimize hand positioning.

🧑‍⚕️ Patient Instruction: Beyond fitting, fellows practiced guiding patients through donning/doffing, skin checks, and safe wear schedules to ensure comfort and compliance.

💡 Functional Carryover: Training didn’t stop at the clinic. Patients practiced real-life tasks, from grasping utensils to typing on a keyboard, demonstrating how splint use translates into meaningful daily activities.

📸 This hands-on experience reinforces our mission: combining technical skill with patient-centered care to maximize upper extremity function.

Travis Miller, OPTA student, is demonstrating an eccentric strengthening exercise that will increase function and decrease pain of wrist extensor muscles. This exercise is commonly used to treat lateral epicondylitis. The final section of the OPTA program that Travis is currently working on is designed to improve the knowledge and education of the student with evidence-based management of the hand, wrist, and elbow.
