NAMI Washington County Oregon is a non-profit organization that follows the NAMI mission: “To improve the lives of those affected by mental illness through education, support and advocacy!”
A lot of us prefer different terms other than “illness”; but we are here for you no matter how you choose to identify. We also want all Peers, family members and friends to share. Be supportive, ask for support and/or questions, share experiences and photos. Let’s also try to have some fun and laughs! Our organization offers free support groups, classes and activities. As well as volunteer opportunities, such as helping with the annual NAMI Walk. We would love to give you a tour of our home. This house was given to NAMI Washington County by Ted and Linda Cornish in 2011. Ted and Linda Cornish have experienced mental health concerns in their own family. What a selfless act; they have invested time, energy and support to NAMI Washington County. Ted has passed away, this year, but Linda Cornish still supports NAMI Washington County. We are fortunate to have such a unique place to consistently provide a safe place for many NAMI Connections support groups, educational opportunities and activities. It is for people who we like to call peers. Our NAMI Affiliate is a place to find help for mental health concerns. We are uniquely different than most NAMI Affiliates. You can volunteer to help tend our very own garden. We would like to welcome you to our house, a safe, non-judgmental atmosphere to talk to others about mental health. Have coffee, tea or a conversation about what we offer at NAMI Washington County. We want you to know you are not alone. While the holidays can bring out joy, it's also a time of year that can bring up a lot of grief.
NAMI's Associate Medical Director Dr. Christine Crawford says it's important to remember that, as a parent, "You don't have to be perfect. You're a human being too."
It's ok to be sad, and you kid might be feeling it too.
One thing you can do to help both of you is model talking about grief for your kid. Bring up how this time of year makes you feel, and talk about what helps you get through it.
This can help you connect with your child, and support both of you as you feel these difficult emotions.
For more of Dr. Crawford's advice and wisdom around parenting, check out her book, You Are Not Alone for Parents and Caregivers, available at youarenotalonebook.org.

You might have a little extra time with your kid right now, while you both have time off from work and school. How can you use this time to have some big conversations with them?
NAMI's Associate Medical Director Dr. Christine Crawford says the key is to smart small - you don't have to get into the big stuff right away. Say things like, "I'm having some difficulty today, I wonder how you've been navigating things?"
By doing this, you're planting seeds. And even if your kid doesn't initially open up, over time, your kid might feel more comfortable coming to you when they have something they need to talk about.

The holidays can bring up so many feelings, not just joy. What can parents be looking for to know if their kid is struggling?
NAMI's Associate Medical Director Christine Crawford says if you notice your kids is not functioning in the way they typically do, get curious about what's behind that change in behavior. If it's going on for more than two weeks, she says to check in with your pediatrician about how you can support your kid during this time of year.

If you are stressed out this time of year, your kids are probably picking up on it. So what can you do to help all of you with this stress?
NAMI's Associate Medical Director Dr. Christine Crawford says that you should talk about your feelings regularly - when they're big, small, or anything in between. By doing this, you're modeling to your kids how to talk about what's inside so that they can get the support they need.

The holidays can be a really stressful time for anyone. When NAMI's Associate Medical Director Dr. Christine Crawford visited us in Oregon, she shared some helpful advice for navigating this time of year, for both parents and children, on KOIN 6 News. We are going to share her wisdom throughout this week, to help you prepare for the holiday weeks ahead.
First, she says combatting this stress starts with opening up a conversation with your kids about what they think about the holiday season. This will help you know how they're feeling, and how you can help them during this time.

There are still a few spots left for our first-of-its-kind Youth Advisory Council!
The YAC is a brand new partnership with Washington County, where youth have a chance to become an advocate for mental and behavioral health in their community. Meetings are set to start in January 2026.
This is a platform for young people in the community to provide input, contribute ideas, and actively participate in advising county leaders on policy, advocating for youth issues, and the evolution of programs to educate youth and those who support youth on behavioral and mental health issues. Questions? Contact Christy Cunningham at christy@washconami.org.
If you are a youth, or know one, who is 16-24 years old and is ready to boost their resume, learn leadership skills, and better their community - apply today! Applications are open until the end of December!
It's Giving Tuesday, and if you are looking to do some end-of-year giving, we would be so grateful if you would consider donating to us!
When you give to NAMI Washington County, you're helping us:
💙 Support peers at over 20 support groups per week - including groups for people living with ADHD, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and more
💙 Put on FREE events and classes for people whose lives have been impacted by mental illness - including classes for parents, youth, and peers struggling with their mental health
💙 Feed our local community on Community Meal Wednesdays - mental and physical health are very much connected, so we're doing our part to provide food to those in need of a good meal and some connection
💙 Keep our building open to provide in-person peer support for those who are struggling or just want company - our building is open Mon-Thurs 10am-6pm, and Friday 10am-4pm
If you would like to donate to support our no-cost services, you can make a one-time or monthly donation at washconami.org/donate

We had a great visit with Dr. Christine Crawford, NAMI's Associate Medical Director!
It was a busy trip - a book signing and Q&A at Hillsboro Public Library, a visit to Sunset High School's Behavioral Health CTE program, and interviews on KOIN 6 and KGW-TV! And we dropped off many copies of her book, "You Are Not Alone for Parents and Caregivers," along the way.
We are so grateful for Dr. Crawford's time and wisdom. She is a wealth of information and advice for parents, students, and anyone else who cares about mental health! You can find her book at youarenotalonebook.org.
