~About Animal Chiropractic~

Animal Chiropractic helps maintain joint and spinal health. It can also help with a variety of musculoskeletal and nerve system related problems. Some common issues that may improve with care are:

- Neck, back, leg, and tail pain
- Traumas from slips, falls, or accidents
- Difficulty getting up or down
- Sports injuries
- TMJ problems
- Chronic health problems

Animal Chiropractors examine the joints of the body and detect motion units that are not moving properly. These "stuck" joints cause improper nervous system input and output, and are know as Vertebral Subluxation Complexes (VSCs). Animal Chiropractors perform high velocity, low amplitude, short lever thrusts in a specific direction to restore proper movement to a joint.

Let’s talk about helping our pups age gracefully and remain safe in our homes during their Golden Years. Puppy-proofing is easy compared to Senior-safety-strategizing!

πŸ’œTraction on hard floors/tiles may become difficult for aging paws- rugs and rubber mats strategically placed can really help. Place by food and water stations and scatter throughout non-carpeted parts of your home to make common pathways easier for pup to navigate.

πŸ’œEating/Drinking from floor level can become difficult with stiff joints and/or balance issues. Elevate Food and Water bowls off floor so your pup doesn’t have to strain to reach them.

πŸ’œJumping in/out of vehicle is never a great idea, and becomes an even worse idea as our pups age. Consider steps or a ramp when your pup is still young and mobile enough to learn to use them. Eventually your pup may still need to be lifted in/out of vehicle, but this can be a great solution for many years and save you lots of lifting!

πŸ’œA favorite spot of the sofa or ottoman may become difficult to access from the floor. A firm foam ramp is one solution. Another is remove the legs from ottoman or sofa so that they sit about 10 inches lower to the ground. Another super easy solution is remove cushion from couch in pup’s favored spot and replace it with a thin dog bed making access from the floor easier.

πŸ’œFor dogs that co-sleep and won’t use ramp or allow themselves to be picked up to get into/out of bed, placing the mattress (and boxspring if necessary) directly on floor gives safer access to pets during the night.

πŸ’œAccess to the yard can become difficult for your pup, especially if there is more than a step or two to navigate. Building a simple ramp and covering it with a good-traction carpet or matting is the best option. You may have to block off rest of step-access while your pup gets used to using the ramp.

Living with and loving a senior dog is an honor and a privilege not everyone gets to experience. Take the time to make the necessary changes to your home so that your best friend can enjoy all of the days the two of you are blessed with πŸ’œ
