Alcona SLS Addresses Food Insecurities With Food Drive

The members of the Alcona Chapter of Students Leading Students hosted a food drive at the end of October to address food insecurities among students and their families. The drive was set up as a classroom challenge, with all proceeds going to the Alcona School’s student locker. The “locker” serves both the high school and elementary and is a place where students can go and pick up free items, from food, to personal care, clothing and winter boots. With the prospect of SNAP dollars not being available in November, the group thought this was a great initiative for their chapter, as food insecurity ties directly to mental health. The winning classroom, Mrs. Luce – Wilson’s 4th hour, averaged 4.4 items donated per person, and will receive an ice cream sundae party, served by SLS members.

Alpena High School’s Students Leading Students (SLS) members enthusiastically embraced Red Ribbon Week by actively engaging their peers in meaningful conversations about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. Through creative messaging and peer-led initiatives, they promoted awareness around making positive choices that steer clear of drugs, alcohol, and other self-destructive behaviors. Their efforts not only highlighted the value of personal well-being but also fostered a supportive school environment where students feel empowered to make informed decisions for their future.

National Drug take back day, October 27,2025, Up North Prevention collaborated with four Northeast Michigan law enforcement agencies to facilitate the safe disposal of unwanted or outdated prescription medications. Through this partnership, a total of 649.5 pounds of medications were collected from the participating agencies and transported to Flint, Michigan, where it was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for proper disposal.

This coordinated effort played a crucial role in preventing potentially dangerous substances from circulating in the community, particularly in schools or on the streets where they could be misused. By working together, Up North Prevention and local law enforcement ensured that these medications were securely handled and eliminated, promoting public safety and supporting substance abuse prevention initiatives.

Posen High School's Red Ribbon Week campaign honors the legacy of DEA agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, whose tragic death in 1985 inspired the national drug prevention movement.

Red Ribbon Week, observed annually from October 23 to October 31, is the nation’s largest and longest-running drug-use prevention campaign. Posen High School’s Students Leading Students (SLS) group kicked off their celebration with themed sunglasses reading “Life is a Puzzle, Solve It Drug Free” this year’s official slogan. The sunglasses were a hit among students, helping to spark conversations about living drug-free and making healthy choices.

The campaign’s origins trace back to the heartbreaking story of DEA Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena. On February 7, 1985, Camarena was abducted in broad daylight outside the U.S. Consulate in Guadalajara, Mexico, just weeks before he was scheduled to return home. He had spent over four years undercover, investigating major drug cartels and contributing to the discovery of a massive ma*****na operation in ChihuahuaGet Smart About Drugs. His work threatened powerful drug traffickers and corrupt officials, leading to his kidnapping and murder. His pilot, Captain Alfredo Zavala-Avelar, was also abducted the same day.

Camarena’s death shocked the nation. In response, communities across the U.S. began wearing red ribbons to honor his sacrifice and to promote drug awareness. This grassroots movement evolved into Red Ribbon Week, officially recognized by Congress in 1988. Today, it serves as a powerful reminder of the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of prevention education.

Posen High’s campaign is part of a broader effort to engage students with meaningful activities, educational resources, and community support. By distributing items like sunglasses and hosting events, schools aim to empower youth to make informed, drug-free choices.

Red Ribbon Week

Event Summary from Arrive Alive website:

"Participants get into an actual vehicle (with battery disabled and car immobilized) and put on a virtual reality headset. Sensors are connected to the vehicle’s gas/brake pedals and steering wheel, enabling the participant to experience drugged driving without the real-life consequences. Upon exiting the vehicle, each participant is handed a mock citation detailing the ramifications of their simulation, as explained by a facilitator. An external LED monitor is set-up near the vehicle, showing what the driver is experiencing in their simulation in real time. The program incorporates an event survey on Android tablets. This survey gauges participants knowledge and experience in relation to drinking while driving before and after they use the simulator."

Much fun was had by all the participants at Kingsley High School, sometimes learning how hard it is to drive when impaired!

Red Ribbon Week as posted on their website:

"Red Ribbon Week 2025 will be held from October 23rd to October 31st. The 2025 theme is "Life Is A Puzzle, Solve It Drug Free," which encourages communities to work together and make positive choices to build a drug-free future. This annual campaign was started in memory of DEA Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, who was killed in the line of duty in 1985. "

Kingsley High School Stand Club promotes Red Ribbon Week for the full Campaign with activities and prizes. Grand Traverse County Certified Prevention Specialist, Linda Solem promoted Red Ribbon Week with a resource table display during the lunch hours with information and swag to take home and share with friends!

Alcona SLS Launches “Road Show” Campaign

Alcona schools played host to Executive Director for Student Leadership Services, Dawn Flood who held a training exclusive to Alcona members. The event, attended by 12 Alcona students, featured warm ups, and other engaging activities for Alcona students to use when speaking to youth in other schools. The training stemmed from the group’s presentation at the 2025 SLS Statewide Conference- one that featured the idea of travelling to other schools to spread the prevention messaging of Students Leading Students, in an effort to start new chapters in the area. Flood, the lead trainer and Executive Director saw this as a great opportunity to write a grant to grow this idea across the state. Her successful grant through the Jamie Daniels Foundation will allow five chapters from across the state to train, travel, and spread the message of SLS to their neighboring school districts. An added bonus for each Mentor chapter is the availability of start up dollars for activities and promotion, and dollars to help offset the cost of attending the statewide conference in March 2026, where they will present their work and results.

Alcona Hosts Atlanta for Red Ribbon Week Event

The Alcona chapter of Students Leading Students hosted the 2nd annual Red Ribbon Week event during the JV/Varsity volleyball matches between the Alcona Tigers and the Atlanta Huskies. The Red Ribbon week event is held across the nation each year at the end of October to promote substance abuse awareness and to help end violent acts, like the one that took the life of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena in 1985, the year that the event started. Alcona members gave t-shirts to each team for their warmups, as well as to youth and adults that interacted with their booth- which also featured educational materials for youth and parents, games for kids, and SLS promotional materials. Over 150 people interacted with the members at the booth during the event.
