Recently, health experts have become alarmed by the growing consumption of ultra-processed foods. Manufacturers of these foods like to make people think that cooking is difficult, boring, and a waste of time--reaching for factory-made meals seems like that's the way to have a happy family meal. Unfortunately, the main flavours present in UPF meals are salt, artificial flavours, sugars, fillers, and colourings. In "How to Add Flavor with Herbs & Spices" on July 29th at 2 pm ET, Ian Hemphill, author of The Spice & Herb Bible and founder of Herbie's Spices in Australia, will highlight how widely marketed spice blends have become so devalued--and so lacking in actual herbs and spices--that they hardly deserve being called spice mixes. He'll also illustrate how using readily available herbs and spices in simple, accessible recipes makes every meal both tasty and satisfying.

Curious about today's food and nutrition landscape? On June 24, join us to hear from Janet Helm, a registered dietitian nutritionist and global food culture analyst, as she provides an overview of the food and nutrition landscape in 2025. The convergence of the food-as-medicine movement and the climate crisis is driving greater interest in plant-forward eating, including heritage diets and cultural foodways, and many people are choosing non-alcoholic or zero-proof beverages for health reasons. TikTok and AI are increasingly influencing pop culture and what eaters want, too, driving a trend toward foods and flavors being more globally inspired.
