When Epilepsy Awareness Month is here, ask people who may not know your secret, "Hey, do you know anyone with seizures?" When they reply no, elbow them and wink while you proclaim, "You do now!" Have fun.

As we conclude this year's Epilepsy Awareness Month, carry on telling everyone you meet, "Hey, do you know someone who has seizures?" and after they say no, you elbow them and wink, "Well you do now!" These Awareness month's get more fun with age!

Remember on this Thanksgiving, I'm grateful for the improvements in the treatment of epilepsy and the societal awareness I've seen in my lifetime. Before each of us gets overwhelmed with periods of self pity for some reason--and they still happen to me--remember that you really don't have to look very far to encounter someone whose condition is worse than our own! God bless us all.

Epilepsy Awareness Month didn't even exist when this picture was taken of me: about the time I started having seizures. 60 years ago. For you "newcomers", there were only 3 kinds of seizures back then; 38 more variations of epilepsy had yet to be classified. People didn't talk about epilepsy. I wouldn't meet another person with epilepsy for 12 more years. There was only one kind of medicine, then, but I've taken 30 over my life. There was no such thing as surgery or implants for people who couldn't be operated on. So for you "newcomers"--or "rookies"--be excited about what is available to you today that I didn't grow up having. Those changes might make your life much more productive and less aggravating than the one I grew up with 😊

Nabbing that rat called “Epilepsy Gangster” has been my goal, since he made me epileptic at the age of 18 months! He hurts people of all ages, even kills people. Epilepsy Gangster ROBS you of opportunities and relationships. He STEALS from retirement & college funds, and basic budgets: to point people may have to choose between buying food or medicine. Finally, he INJURES and KILLS, whether it is the person who has epilepsy and fall on their heads or people who are nearby if an epileptic survivor has a car or equipment accident.
