Epilepsy Awareness Month didn't even exist when this picture was taken of me: about the time I started having seizures. 60 years ago. For you "newcomers", there were only 3 kinds of seizures back then; 38 more variations of epilepsy had yet to be classified. People didn't talk about epilepsy. I wouldn't meet another person with epilepsy for 12 more years. There was only one kind of medicine, then, but I've taken 30 over my life. There was no such thing as surgery or implants for people who couldn't be operated on. So for you "newcomers"--or "rookies"--be excited about what is available to you today that I didn't grow up having. Those changes might make your life much more productive and less aggravating than the one I grew up with 😊

When seizures and medicine have you incapacitated, spend your time thinking about what simple things make you happy, what it is you'd like to do. Next step, figure out the baby steps--however rediculous they seem to you at the time--that you need to take to pull it off

💜🎩Tim Ulmer & The Epilepsy Gangster Pays Tribute to 9/11!🎩💜
Every generation has at least that one moment in time so horrific that they remember everything about where they were when they heard the news: When Pearl Harbor was bombed, Pres. Kennedy was assassinated, and 9/11.

I was a TV news producer at the time, and our ABC station had just finished it’s routine 5-minute local clip and switched back to the network’s Good Morning America. But now, Dianne Sawyer was somber without any warm greetings. She told that an airliner had just flown into the World Trade Center.

Normally, reporters and cameramen at my TV station would start a staff meeting and leave on their day’s assignments within the next 15 minutes. But that day, it would be nearly an hour before we even got hold of our wits to remember that we had to produce a show of our own. We remained fixed around the monitors from New York, hypnotized. I attacked a college intern I perceived to be insensitive when, who without anything to compare the situation’s gravity to in his life, said, “WOW! THAT JUST LIKE SOMETHING FROM A MOVIE!”

But the worst situations in America also bring out the best in Americans. Our youngest in America haven’t realized such a national horror—yet. Whatever be our personal tragedies, we owe it to the people who died that day to remember their heroic feats, and the brave passengers aboard Flight 93 who thwarted terrorist hijackers from crashing another into the US Capitol Building. I pray that our remembering those heroes will do something to avoid our younger people ever seeing such a thing, but at least serve as an inspiration for them to know what to do when they do face such a catastrophe.
