With Thanksgiving recently behind us, you may be asking yourself, "How am I going to survive the holidays?". With all of the family dynamics, stress of cooking and hosting, buying gifts, and praying that no one brings up religion or politics at the table, you may be dreading parts of the holiday season more than you are celebrating.

In his November article, Dr. Rick explores the common experience of merely surviving the holidays and gives tips on getting through this often stressful time of year.

Dr. Rick Petronella The holiday season can bring mixed emotions for many. For some, it’s their favorite time of year. It’s a time of joy, celebration, family, and warmth. For others, it can bring feelings of sadness and loss. It’s a time of remembering loved ones they have lost, struggles with...

In an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, Compass Consulting wishes to remind you of our teleconferencing and phone appointment options as well as share our response plan.

"To Our Valued Clients and Their Families,

We have always offered teleconferencing and phone sessions to our clients who prefer them, so we are well prepared to utilize this option as needed so you won’t need to miss therapy sessions. It is extremely easy to use video chat option via Skype or Zoom that connects you directly and seamlessly to your therapist via a HIPAA-compliant connection or, you can just use phone minus video for a simple phone call session.

Video conferencing closely replicates the experience of in-person session using HIPAA-compliant software that ensures confidentiality; clients can speak with a therapist in real time over video using a computer, tablet, or smartphone. All one needs is an Internet connection and a (fairly) quiet place for conversation. Video teleconferencing eliminates the need to travel to an office or sit in a waiting room, thereby saving time and money, enhancing privacy, and reducing exposure to germs.

Also remember…

While we are open, we are sanitizing the office several times daily and providing hand sanitizer to all clients!

We are sanitizing surfaces that are regular touch-points frequently each day, such as door handles and faucets, to help lessen the spread of germs. We will also be washing our hands several times throughout the day and encourage clients to do the same.

Additionally, our restrooms and waiting rooms have disinfectant wipes, spray or cleaner for your use should you want to wipe down a surface (such as a faucet) right before you use it, and hand sanitizer available.

Call our office if you are interested in setting up a teleconference or phone call session or have a question about our health practices.

We are praying blessings, health, and safety for you all during these strange times. We are here for you.

Dr. Rick recently had the opportunity to speak to a Parents of Prodigals support group through Prodigal Child Ministries, where he explored what it looks like to love someone that is struggling with an addiction. What is the difference between anger and hatred? Where is the line between codependency and love? How do you set boundaries with an addicted loved one? Read the notes on Dr. Rick's presentation here, and see if Prodigal Child Ministries could provide support to you as a parent of a "prodigal child".

Out of Control Addiction is often out of control when the decision is made to enter recovery. Life has become unmanageable, affecting numerous areas. There may be occupational problems, relational conflicts, housing concerns, legal issues, and spiritual dryness. Common emotional problems include in
