One Yelp reviewer likens Matilda's Cottage to a friend's back yard. That is, a friend's back yard outfitted with all the fixings for a picnic and a live band. Many customers seem to agree, given that Matilda's Cottage is a popular place in Alpharetta to enjoy music and a meal.

Just a stone's throw from Orion Deerfield Village, Matilda's Cottage welcomes families to set up shop on its lawn with their own picnic spread. Kids 16 and younger get in free, and leashed dogs can join the fun as well, so bring along the entire brood for a concert here. Don't forget to pack a picnic, though, since Matilda's Cottage doesn't provide fare. Folks bring all kinds of meals, from gourmet spreads complete with candlelight to casual sandwiches and sodas, so pack whatever your group likes to eat and head to Matilda's for live music.

Sometimes, life can get a little hectic. Running from the office to your Orion Deerfield Village apartment to a date or dinner with friends can be hard enough without all the little things. Luckily, there are a few simple (and free!) apps out there designed to make things easier. Here are three to try:

Simple Grocery List
The name says it all! Use this app to easily keep track of your grocery needs on your iPhone. No more worrying about where to find a pen, or where you left the grocery list — you've always got it with you. Just write in what you want, and you're good to go.

Wunderlist
This one is for the list makers. Wunderlist lets you write lists accessible from your phone or tablet, but it also helps group these lists into helpful categories like work and travel. Plus, you can invite people into group lists, making it ideal for trips with friends or family, or projects for work.

SuperNotes
If you ever have trouble keeping track of important thoughts, you may want to check out SuperNotes. Perfect for lectures, personal projects and business presentations, SuperNotes helps you keep details from running away. As an added benefit, you can record your voice and SuperNotes will type up what you say. If you want to get more specific, this handy app also allows users to color code, add photos, and keep reminders on notes.

Many of Hop Alley Brew Pub's beers could be called hyper-local—that is, they come from within the house. This brewery and restaurant always pours at least a few of its own concoctions. Although the draft list changes regularly, you might find beers such as Hellfire IPA and POFT Saison on the list, along with some seasonal suds such as the pumpkin-spiced Simple Jack-O-Lantern and Frankenstrong, a Belgian pale ale. Other craft beers from the Alpharetta region and beyond mingle with the in-house drafts, and Hop Alley also serves a number of bottled beers from all over.

Make the short drive from Orion Deerfield Village to Hop Alley Brew Pub to sip something new, or simply come for a meal. The cider-brined pork chop comes with ample servings of butternut squash and sauteed spinach. The crawfish, on the other hand, arrives with andouille sausage, celery, onions, and peppers in a blackened pan sauce, all strewn across pimento cheese grits. For something lighter, try the fried cheese curds with your beer.

The inspiration behind Pure Taqueria's name is two-fold. First and foremost, Pure Taqueria is a manifestation of what owners and seasoned restaurateurs Michele and Chris Sedgwick consider a true taqueria, what they describe as "hip, loud, sophisticated and fun" on the eatery's About Us page. Second of all, the moniker pays homage to the flagship location's former life as a Pure Fuel Oil Station dating back to the 1920s. Although that stone building only serves as storage today for the Alpharetta location near Orion Deerfield Village, and the restaurant was built from the foundation up, it still harkens back to an era when Mexican food wasn't quite as widespread on this side of the border.

Pure still doles out the same modern Mexican fare as it did on opening day in 2005. Try the citrusy fish tacos, overflowing with grilled veggies, or the chipotle chicken. They're some of the more creative items, but Pure Taqueria also serves classics like empanadas, fajitas, tostadas, and even margaritas.

Fresh herbs add much-needed flavor to just about every dish. Keeping fresh herbs handy at Orion Deerfield Village, though, can be challenging. Here's a solution; grow your own herb garden. It might prove easy if you follow these tips:

1) Choose the right herbs.
Chives, rosemary, thyme, oregano, and mint are easy to care for so they're perfect for a beginner's garden. Not only that, but they can also be used in a variety of dishes. If you can find a spot on your windowsill for the garden, make sure to use four-inch pots.

2) Sit them in the sun.
Herbs require six hours, minimum, of strong sunlight each day. If you notice that your herbs tend to have long stems and few leaves, then they probably aren't getting enough light. Make sure to turn your plants every now and then to make sure all parts are getting enough sun.

3) Water them correctly.
It may take some time to figure out the perfect watering schedule. To figure out if your herbs need water, stick your finger 1 1/2 inches into the soil. If it's damp, the plant doesn't need anymore water at that time.

Alpharetta's own artists hold class at Just for Giggles. The aptly named art studio keeps guests giggling whether they've brought their own bubbly or not. Although the painting instructors welcome you to BYOB (and food), you can forgo that invitation and still enjoy some fun with friends while you learn how to paint your own work of art.

The studio supplies the tools you'll need to get painting, so just bring yourself and an open mind. Every pupil gets his or her own canvas, upon which they'll paint a chosen scene under the guidance of the instructor. Since Just for Giggles only hosts small classes, each student gets as much attention as they need to complete their work. At the end of the night, you can take your new painting home and hang it up at Orion Deerfield Village.

Eating dessert before dinner is totally acceptable at Alpine Bakery and Trattoria. After all, its pastry chefs craft lavish desserts that are hard to resist. Most people who frequent the eatery say that the raspberry white chocolate mousse cake is the best option on the dessert menu, but carrot cake and red velvet cake don't fall far behind.

Once you've quieted your sweet tooth, move on to the main course. The dinner menu encompasses various versions of classic Italian fare. Dig into a stromboli or calzone, nosh on slices of pizza, or opt for a meat- or seafood-based dish. The chefs enlist traditional techniques while crafting the food and serve it in hefty portions, so you might have enough left over to take home and stick in the fridge at nearby Orion at Deerfield Village.
