We are continuing the Functional Health Framework Series with the first pillar: nutrient dense food.
The nutrients we receive from food provide the vitamins, minerals, micronutrients, and antioxidants that allow our cells to function properly.
These nutrients support energy production, healthy skin and joints, and overall metabolic health.
One of the simplest ways to improve nutrition is to focus on whole foods that are as close as possible to how they appear in nature.
For example, an apple with its peel intact is a whole food. Some foods can be eaten raw, while others may make certain nutrients more available when lightly cooked.
Another important consideration is pesticide exposure. Resources such as the Environmental Working Group Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen lists can help guide food choices when shopping.
Choosing more whole foods and more nutrient dense foods over time can make a meaningful difference in long term health.
We will continue exploring nutrition and the other pillars of the Functional Health Framework throughout this series.
