We are continuing the Functional Health Framework Series with the first pillar: nutrient dense food.

The nutrients we receive from food provide the vitamins, minerals, micronutrients, and antioxidants that allow our cells to function properly.

These nutrients support energy production, healthy skin and joints, and overall metabolic health.

One of the simplest ways to improve nutrition is to focus on whole foods that are as close as possible to how they appear in nature.

For example, an apple with its peel intact is a whole food. Some foods can be eaten raw, while others may make certain nutrients more available when lightly cooked.

Another important consideration is pesticide exposure. Resources such as the Environmental Working Group Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen lists can help guide food choices when shopping.

Choosing more whole foods and more nutrient dense foods over time can make a meaningful difference in long term health.

We will continue exploring nutrition and the other pillars of the Functional Health Framework throughout this series.

The mind body spirit connection is the foundation of health.

In the Functional Health Framework, this is where everything begins. It influences how your nervous system functions, how you digest, how you regulate hormones, and how your body repairs and heals.

When the body perceives stress, it shifts into a survival response. Digestion slows, cortisol increases, and the body is no longer focused on repair or balance.

This is not just mindset. It is physiology.

Even something as simple as shallow breathing can keep the body in a state of stress. One of the easiest ways to begin shifting this is through intentional breathing.

Taking five deep breaths, especially when you wake up, before meals, or before bed, can help support your nervous system and begin restoring balance.

This is where the framework begins.

You can watch the full video on the feed to learn more.

This is where the Functional Health Framework begins.

Everything builds from the Mind Body Spirit connection.

Before advanced testing and personalization, the focus is on the state of the nervous system. This influences digestion, blood sugar regulation, hormone balance, and even cholesterol levels.

In this video, Dr. Miller explains why something as simple as five intentional breaths can begin to shift the body out of stress mode and into a state where healing becomes possible.

When the Mind Body Spirit connection is supported, every other system can function more effectively.

Follow along as we continue building the framework.

We’re beginning a new series on building a foundation for long-term health.

In my practice, I often see that it is not always clear where to begin when it comes to improving your health.

This series is designed to walk through the framework I use to help patients build that foundation in a clear and sustainable way.

We begin with the mind body spirit connection and build from there through four key pillars:

• Nutrient dense food
• Mindful movement
• Restorative sleep
• Adrenal health

Within nutrition, we will also explore food quality, environmental exposures, and foundational supplements, all of which play an important role in how the body functions.

And finally, the role of community and connection.

Each video will focus on one part of the framework and how it supports your overall health.

The goal is not perfection, but small, consistent steps that support the body over time.

Follow along as we move through the series together, with new videos added each week.

In this video, I also share a simple handout with foods rich in manganese that you can begin incorporating right away. You can find the link in my stories.

Perfect quick vegetarian/vegan soup!! Red Kuri squash and lentil with spicygremolata. Full disclosure - I had chopped up a small red kuri squash in the fall and froze it. Makes assembly of the soup way quicker.

If baking helps you slow down and find your Zen zone, I shared one of my favorite holiday recipes in the latest blog post. The recipe is for pumpkin muffins made with warm spices, pumpkin, and optional walnuts and dark chocolate, mixed simply and baked until cozy and golden.

The post also includes reflections on seasonal change, intention, and a simple New Year ritual for letting go of what no longer serves and choosing what to carry forward.

Link in bio + stories to get the recipe and read more.

As we move into the shortest days of the year, this is a natural time to reflect on change, intention, and how we are showing up in our daily lives.

The latest blog post shares these reflections, along with a simple New Year ritual of letting go of what no longer serves and choosing what we wish to cultivate in the year ahead.
