What is Parent Accommodation?

As parents, our instinct is to protect. When we see our kids in distress, we want to jump in and fix it immediately. But when it comes to anxiety, "fixing" it for them could actually make the mole hill into a mountain. This is called Parental Accommodation. It feels like love, but it often acts as a barrier to growth. By removing every stressor, we accidentally tell our kids: "You aren't strong enough to handle this".

The goal isn't to show "tough love" but to be supportive. Support means acknowledging the anxiety while understanding that they can handle the discomfort. Swipe through to see if you’re inadvertently accommodating anxiety and how to reframe your language to build a more resilient child.

At DK Counseling Services, we often hear the phrase "I’m fine" used as a shield. It is used in life and also in therapy as a way to protect others from our heaviness, or perhaps to protect ourselves from having to face it. But today, we want to invite you to put that shield down for just a moment.

As therapists, we see the bravery it takes to just power through those hard days. We want to remind you: Your nervous system wasn't built to be "on" 24/7.

This is us just checking in and if you feel comfortable, share how you are today on this scale:

Resting: I’ve found a pocket of peace and I’m refilling my cup.

Functioning: I’m getting things done, but I’m operating on autopilot.

Sprinting: I’m running at 100mph and starting to feel the fatigue.

Empty: I have nothing left to give today and I need to pause.

Whatever your answer is, please hear this: It is not a failure to be human. You do not need to "fix" your mood to be worthy of space and respect.

How are you holding up today? Comment below and share with those that may need a check in.👇

Sunday scaries hit us when we least expect it and can take a toll on our mental health. When it's time for bed and you have the next week's tasks, social obligations, daily stresses on your mind, here are 5 steps to quiet your mind and start the week off with a restful sleep.

Your brain isn’t a light switch—you can’t just flip it "off" and expect instant, high-quality sleep. 💡Think of your mind like a laptop at the end of a long workday. If you just slam the lid shut while 50 tabs are still open, it’s going to run hot all night. You have to take the time to close the tabs, save your progress, and power down properly. 💻✨

This "Mental Wellness Routine" isn’t about being perfect or having an "aesthetic" nightstand. It’s about Sleep Hygiene—the practice of signaling to your nervous system that it is finally safe to let go of the day.

If you’ve been feeling burnt out or waking up tired, try picking just one of these steps to add to your night starting this evening. 🌙

💬 Let’s chat: What is one "non-negotiable" in your nighttime routine that helps you feel human again? Drop it in the comments! 👇

The "New Year, New You" pressure is real—but you don't need to be a different person. You just need better tools. Here are 5 ways to prioritize your mental health this year.

1) Big resolutions often lead to big burnout. Instead of "Fixing my anxiety," try "I will take 3 deep breaths when I feel my heart race." Small wins build the neural pathways for lasting change.
2) Peace is often found in what you say "no" to. Whether it’s work emails after 6 PM or a draining friendship, setting boundaries isn’t selfish—it’s essential for your nervous system.
3) If your feed makes you feel "less than," it’s time to unfollow. Your brain deserves a break from the comparison trap. Try a "no-phone" hour right after you wake up.
4) Movement isn't just about physical fitness; it’s a vital tool for mental regulation.
For those living with Anxiety or ADHD, your body often stores excess energy and cortisol (the stress hormone). This can feel like restlessness, 'brain fog,' or a constant sense of dread.
5) Whether it’s the 'shutdown' from Trauma, the heavy fatigue of depression, or social burnout, isolation can feel like the safest option. While retreating provides a temporary break, it’s meaningful connections that actually helps us heal.

New year, same you—and that’s totally okay. 🌿

While the world is all about "new versions" and "total overhauls," we want to remind you that the person you already are is worthy of care, rest, and healing. Entering a new year doesn't mean you have to leave your progress behind; it means you get more space to nurture it.

Therapy isn't just about fixing what’s "broken"—it’s about investing in the most important relationship you’ll ever have: the one with yourself. Whether you’re continuing your journey or ready to start a new chapter, remember that your mental health matters today, tomorrow, and every day.

Happy New Year! Let’s make this the year of self-love, healing, and knowing you are amazing! ✨
