Shameless Endorsement - SBM is the leader in surgical benefits management for self-funded employee health plans. Employees literally pay $0 out of pocket for surgeries when their self-funded company ads SBM as an ad-on rider policy to their plan. It's an amazing benefit.

Lee Jacobsen, SBM CEO says, "High quality surgical care for employees and their dependents who need surgery. Our concierge service reduces employer's costs by an average of 40% and reduce or eliminate employee out of pocket expenses"

We use this for our company and have been amazed. We think this surgery ad-on deserves a serious look, so we’re posting it here. See them online at www.surgerybenefitmanagement.com.

QUESTION - What's the quickest way to get my body into ketosis?

A - The quickest way to get your body into ketosis is to drastically reduce your intake of carbohydrates and increase your intake of healthy fats. This will cause your body to shift from using glucose as its primary source of energy to using ketones, which are produced by the liver from fat. To achieve this, you should aim for a diet that is high in healthy fats such as avocado, olive oil, nuts, and seeds and low in carbohydrates, such as bread, pasta, and sugary foods. Additionally, you can consider intermittent fasting, which can help speed up the process of ketosis.

The Underutilized Power of Touch—Touch is the red-headed step child of our senses when it comes to human interaction. Look at me, hear me speak, smell my fragrance, but don’t you dare touch me. Blame our litigious habits, our increasingly electronic communication or our girthy American personal bubbles. Whatever the case, this touch deprivation is quietly robbing us of a better life, researchers say.

Myth of the Month—A guide to medications that are past their prime. We’ve all experienced it: reaching into the cabinet only to find medicine labeled with an “EXP” date from the past, not the future. Here lies the choice: go to the doctor and get a new prescription, or just use the old stuff?

MYTH BUSTING? No pain, no gain
This seems to be the war cry in many gyms. Usually espoused by big muscled bros. Pushing yourself and testing your limits is fine. But needing to feel the pain to ensure a decent workout is not needed. Dr. Brian Parr, Associate Professor in the Department of Exercise and Sports Science at the University of South Carolina Aiken, sums it up:

“The idea that exercise should hurt is simply wrong — muscle pain during or following exercise usually suggests an injury.”
This myth has been debunked many times, including by the best in the business MythBusters.

Health experts advise that your workout should be challenging, but you should stop as soon as you experience pain.

STOPPED LOSING WEIGHT ON KETO?
The ketogenic, or keto, diet is a low-carb way of eating that has been adopted by many looking to lose weight and improve health. When following a keto diet, carbs are typically reduced to 20 to 50 grams per day. This has been shown to lead to weight loss and may improve heart health and blood sugar control as well. FAT SHAMING—Are you familiar with the relatively new term of “fat-shaming?” Fat-shaming is when people try to make others who fall into the categories of overweight and obese feel badly about themselves and about their bodies. Those staunchly against fat-shaming promote overall body positivity— the idea that all people should feel comfortable in their own skin, be proud of their bodies, and feel confident in the way they look no matter their size.
