PLEASE READ: This video demonstrates a principle in neuroscience called selective attention — the brain’s natural process of filtering and prioritizing information based on what it believes is relevant.

Some people WILL absolutely notice the yellow vase and other colors. This is normal.

Brains differ in how broadly or narrowly they filter information. Factors such as attentional style, nervous system state, novelty sensitivity, creativity and individual differences can all influence what enters conscious awareness.

The instruction to focus on blue objects was not intended to deceive. It was used to illustrate how easily attention can be directed, and how that direction influences what the brain brings into the foreground.

This reflects an everyday process.

Our brains are constantly filtering reality — not to mislead us, but to help us manage the overwhelming amount of sensory information we receive every second.

This video is an example of that process, not a test, diagnosis, or judgment of anyone’s perception.

We cannot heal with urgency. We cannot heal with busyness. If you have an agenda with healing, it will leave you with frustration, set-backs, and a whole mix of emotions.

Healing happens in slowness. There is no other way. You cannot be healing in a calm, rested state while approaching life with urgency.

Even if/when our schedules get busy, because they will, we still must find moments of slowness.

When we experience high stress in life, we dissociate from many things including our own body. If symptoms are ignored, the body continues to layer multiple symptoms until you start to listen. This can look like layers of tension, pain, anxiety, fear, or rigidity which will all influence our nervous system’s adaptability.

When this happens, the nervous system lacks the ‘opportunity’ to grow and heal and we become embodied into a state of survival. Survival strategies cloud our ability to communicate, make aligned decisions, have a clear vision of our purpose, choose chaos over peace, pleasure and excitement over consistency and safety, it drives us to look for an quick answer as opposed to moving through a process.

Safety is the foundation for a resilient nervous system. Safety to slow down. Safety to be present. Safety to feel joy and happiness. Safety to feel love. Safety to rest.

5️⃣ Parenting Tips Bringing Teens & Parents Together

I remember clashing with my parents, especially my mom. I was a logical, independent thinker, and her “because I said so” boomer mentality led to constant conflicts. She often justified things with “my mom did it this way,” like there was only one way to parent, passed down through generations. (Let’s just say it didn’t go well when I once said, “Well, look how YOU turned out!” during an argument.) So, when I became a dad to two teens (now almost 18 and 15), I knew I wanted to parent differently—based on who they are as unique individuals. I even asked them for their top five ideas on how parents and teens can connect better in 2024. Here’s what we came up with:
