February is National Cancer Prevention Month. As oncology PAs, we play a vital role in educating patients on actionable ways to reduce cancer risk and emphasizing the importance of early detection. While prevention can’t guarantee cancer won’t develop, reducing risk wherever possible supports long-term health. Cancer risk is shaped by both modifiable and non-modifiable factors—there’s no single perfect strategy, but every positive choice matters.

Key prevention steps include maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, staying physically active, protecting skin from the sun, completing routine cancer screenings and physicals, quitting smoking, and limiting alcohol intake.

This month is a reminder to focus on prevention in our own lives and to continue empowering patients on their cancer prevention journeys. 💙

National Blood Donor Month

January is National Blood Donor Month, highlighting the ongoing need for blood and platelet donations—a need that is especially urgent in oncology. Many patients with cancer depend on transfusions to safely receive chemotherapy, radiation, or stem cell transplantation, particularly during periods of treatment-related cytopenias.

Winter months often bring a decline in blood donations, increasing the risk of shortages that can delay treatment and worsen patient outcomes. With platelets lasting only a few days, maintaining a steady donor base is essential.

Oncology advanced practice providers are uniquely positioned to advocate for blood donation through education, community outreach, and collaboration with local blood banks. By raising awareness and encouraging eligible donors, APPs help ensure lifesaving blood products are available when patients need them most.

This National Blood Donor Month. One donation can support multiple patients. One conversation can inspire many donors. And one month can help sustain a vital resource all year long.

Cervical Cancer Awareness Month is January

Cervical cancer is largely preventable with routine screening and HPV vaccination. Yet each year, too many women are still diagnosed—often at advanced stages—because screening was delayed or missed.

Key reminders this month:
- HPV vaccination can prevent the majority of cervical cancers.
- Regular Pap and HPV testing saves lives through early detection.
- If you are eligible for cervical screenings, schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider annually.
- Symptoms often don’t appear until disease is advanced—screening matters.
- Regular screenings can detect abnormal cell changes early, which can prevent cervical cancer.

Let’s use January to encourage our patients, families, and communities to stay up to date on screening and vaccination. Awareness leads to prevention, and prevention saves lives. 💙
