Hosting this holiday season? Before you reach for your usual oil, remember that highly processed seed oils (canola, corn, sunflower) are high in Omega-6s, which can contribute to unwanted inflammation.

For cleaner cooking, swap them out for heart-healthy olive oil—great for roasting and baking—or avocado oil for high-heat cooking. A small change can make a big difference in your holiday dishes.

At 86, Shelly was still a force: tending her garden, wrestling with her push mower, and keeping up with her grandkids. But then, persistent pain began to slow her down, bringing her active life to a stop.

The relentless hip pain made every step difficult, stealing her ability to do the things she loves. “It felt like something was rattling around in my hip,” Shelly said. “Like how a loose wheel wobbles on a grocery cart.”

But Shelly wasn't ready to let pain win.

She met with BJC Medical Group orthopedic surgeon Nicholas Wilson, MD, at Progress West Hospital. Dr. Wilson discovered the cause: A loose piece from an older joint replacement was the culprit. He recommended a new hip replacement to restore her mobility and quality of life.

The procedure was a complete success.

Shelly’s recovery was smooth, and before long, the pain was gone. She credited the compassionate support she received at Progress West Hospital. “Everyone at Progress West took great care of me,” Shelly says. “From the moment I arrived, I felt supported by every team member and knew I was in the right place for my hip replacement.”

Today, Shelly is living proof that expert orthopedic care makes all the difference. She is pain-free and back to tackling her own demanding yard work, confidently using both a string trimmer and a push mower. Everyday movements—squatting, getting in and out of bed—are easy again.

Don't let pain stop your life. If joint pain is holding you back from the things you love, our experts at BJC Medical Group offer personalized treatment and advanced surgical procedures.

We are thrilled to welcome Abigail Kenney, FNP-C, a certified family nurse practitioner, to BJC Medical Group Primary Care at Shiloh.

Abigail first felt called to become a nurse as a teenager, working as a lifeguard, helping others and responding to people in need.

After graduating, she began her career in the Emergency Department. It was there on the front lines that she realized many patients were cycling back into the hospital.

"What many patients needed most were strong primary care providers who could help keep them healthy and out of the Emergency Department," said Abigail. This motivated her transition to focusing on prevention, health education, and early disease detection as a certified family nurse practitioner.

Her commitment to prevention led to one of her proudest moments: She encouraged a hesitant patient to finally complete a cancer screening that ended up detecting the disease early. Because it was caught in time, the patient avoided far more extensive treatment. "Moments like that remind me why this work matters," Abigail says. "Building lasting relationships and supporting people through different stages of their lives is one of the most fulfilling parts of my job."

This commitment to continuity means Abigail emphasizes open, honest communication, fostering a space where individuals feel heard, respected, and involved in their care. Abigail offers a full range of services for patients of all ages, including pediatric and adult physicals, well-woman exams, and vaccinations. She manages both acute and chronic conditions, such as asthma, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes, and provides gynecological services like preconception consultations, birth control, and menopause management.

Originally from St. Jacob, Illinois, Abigail enjoys staying active—especially weightlifting and going on walks—and spending quality time with her family, valuing the closeness of her extended family nearby.

We are excited to welcome Emily Hutchinson, DO, a board-certified family medicine physician, to BJC Medical Group at Progress West–Primary Care.

A concussion in high school began Dr. Hutchinson's path to medicine. She was moved by her doctors, who explained her condition in a way that put her at ease. “That experience opened my eyes to how much of an impact a good physician can have on patients,” she shares. “It inspired me to pursue a career where I could help others the same way my doctors helped me.”

Dr. Hutchinson was drawn to family medicine for the opportunity to care for patients of all ages and backgrounds, valuing the continuity and long-term relationships that develop over time.

These meaningful relationships are what she finds most rewarding. Supporting individuals and families through different stages of life allows her to better understand their needs and provide more meaningful health support. Dr. Hutchinson finds it incredibly rewarding to see patients meet their health goals—a result of their hard work—and to know she played a part in that success.

Following 30 years of pain, a Fredericktown firefighter's only regret after total knee replacement is not doing it sooner.

Russell, a tough, active man who splits his time between fighting fires and working in a cobalt mine, originally injured his knee in a basketball accident at age 26. For years, he adjusted his active life around the pain, giving up pieces of himself. But the injury wasn’t done with him. The constant wear led to severe arthritis and bone grinding, finally forcing him to seek help.

Jesse Beard, DO, a BJC Medical Group orthopedic surgeon at Parkland Health Center, confirmed that Russell needed a total knee replacement.

Russell chose to move forward, and the results were immediate: “That evening I was up and walking on it,” he says. “It totally amazed me.”

Though rehabilitation was challenging, with the help of BJC Home Care, Russell was able to receive exercises designed to improve his strength and range of motion at home until he was strong enough to attend outpatient rehab sessions.

Today, at 56, he has reclaimed his active life. He says that now climbing ladders is a lot easier, he can jump and squat down, and he can do a lot more with his 3-year-old grandson.

Russell has only one regret: "Not doing this surgery sooner."

If lingering pain is holding you back from the job, hobbies, or family moments you love, advanced relief like Russell’s is possible at Parkland Health Center.

Let all Oz be agreed, they’re wickedly adorable through and through. 💚

From the moment we laid eyes on them, these little ones had our hearts defying gravity. Every little kick, however small, feels like dancing through life. They're simply wonderful, and their future is unlimited. Their parents couldn’t be happier. And soon they’ll be flying home on their brooms and bubbles because, after all, there’s no place like home.

Because we knew you, sweet babies, we have been changed for good.

Please always remember safe sleep practices. Babies should sleep on their backs, alone in a crib, with no loose blankets or toys. Thank you to our wonderful nursing team for closely watching our babies during this photo session!
