A Horse's Truth About How We Help Humans Learn
Chapter One: I Am Always Teaching, Even When You're Not Asking Me To
---------
From my point of view, there's a big difference between teaching and training.
I know because I experience both.
When you train me, you have a goal. A result. You're focused on what I should do next and how quickly I should get it.
Training isn't wrong. I need clarity, safety, and consistency to live well in a human world. Training helps me understand pressure and release, boundaries, how to move my body in response to your requests.
But teaching? Teaching is different.
When I'm teaching, I'm not performing.
I'm responding.
I'm offering information through:
My breath.
My posture.
My movement.
My hesitation.
And sometimes, my refusal.
I'm showing you what happens when a human arrives:
Unsure. Disconnected. Impatient.
Or curious. Grounded. Present.
Here's what matters:
I don't need to be fixed in those moments.
I'm not confused.
I'm communicating.
Not every response needs to be corrected.
Sometimes the pause is the lesson.
Sometimes the hesitation is the truth.
Sometimes my choice to wait, to turn away, to soften; that's me teaching.
You just have to be willing to listen. 🧡
Sincerely,
Your Horse
