Keep sharing! There is a match out there!

Did you know you can be a living donor by donating part of your liver, and it will grow back?

There are two forms of living donation.

1. Directed organ donation occurs when your loved one, friend, or community member needs a liver, and you are a match and are able to donate part of your liver to them.

2. Non-directed organ donation occurs when you do not know of a recipient in need but undergo an evaluation and offer to donate to the first person you match with.

They say that when you become a non-directed donor, you often kickstart a paired donation chain. So, do you think you have what it takes to be Alex's or someone else's superhero? Apply today!

Sorry it’s been a few days since an update has been made. Today is day 20 in the hospital. Alex had a total of three rapid responses called, plus two more scares while he was in the ICU. He was transferred to the respiratory floor, where they are working on getting him to wear his bi pap machine more. They have changed the settings, masks, etc. He got almost four hours on it last night. They changed his catheter last night. They are working on trying to get the MRI rescheduled. He is retaining a lot of fluid, so they are trying to get it off with the help of IV diuretics. He is very weak right now. They have PT coming in to work with him, but in the setting of the hospital, they can’t do as much as they’d like. They have been able to get him to sit on the edge of the bed and do a partial stand because of the swelling and the pain from his back. But every day is progress. They are hopeful that they will be able to get him to a rehab center after he is well enough to really work on getting stronger. They are trying to help with his mental health, as it’s obviously taking a toll on him being away from home for so long. His body has been through so much. We’re asking for as many prayers as we can get.

Just wanted to give a quick updated: Alex is on the respiratory floor, working on getting used to the bi-pap machine at night. It looks like he will be in the hospital for a few more weeks while they work on getting his overall health back.

Anyone who will have orders please reach out to make plans to pick up orders and money next week

Boy, oh boy, has this admission been quite the roller coaster ride!!! 😳 Alex has been stable for the last 48 hours! He was moved from the transplant ICU to the medical ICU, but it's looking like he might be transferred to another floor sometime today or tomorrow. They are really hoping to get him on the respiratory floor to work on getting him comfortable with the bi-pap machine, but it will depend on whether he is willing and if there's a bed available. Physical therapy has been in for the last two days and has been able to get him to sit on the side of the bed and stand with a two-person assist. He has a lot of work ahead to regain his strength. They are continuing to work on decreasing his ammonia levels as well as safely getting the fluid off of him.

Please keep praying!
Doctors were in this morning. The pain doctors do not think the episodes of unresponsiveness were caused by the pain meds, because he has been on the same meds for the last 10 years since he broke his back the first time. They think it's more that his body is getting exhausted from the constant fight it faces. So they are going to start his pain meds again, but on a lower dose, just to be cautious.

He's more alert and awake today, probably the most I've seen in a week or so! That's good, but he's definitely feeling like crap and has a massive headache. But that is expected.

Right now, we are just letting him sleep while we wait for the pharmacy to send his meds up.

They are starting his diuretics again to get some of the fluid off of him; he still has blisters on his legs from it accumulating. They are also going to push more meds for his liver toxins built up to be flushed out. The MRI is on hold until we make sure he's more stable.

The only way he will get remotely better is if a liver becomes available or we find his superhero to donate to him!

Please help us find Alex a liver!

Please continue to keep Alex in your thoughts and prayers. They had to call another rapid response on him today. They took him down for his MRI, but he was too drowsy to use sedation for it. So they sent him back upstairs, which is when he became unresponsive and started breathing shallow. The doctor thinks that his body is just reacting to everything differently because he's becoming sicker, which in turn is making everything work harder and it's having a hard time keeping up with it. They are holding all pain medicine for the time being, so we will see how that goes. They are hopeful we will be able to get it under control and at some point this week get the MRI done.

I will be staying at the Family House for the next few days to try to be here to advocate and support him in the best way that I can. Please continue to keep Alex, the kids, and myself in your thoughts and prayers as we all try to navigate through this.
