One way for your optometrist to test for dry eye syndrome is by checking for “Tear Break Up Time” or TBUT. This is done by instilling fluorescein dye in the eyes and checking to see how long it takes for the first dry spot to appear after a complete blink under the slit lamp. Normal TBUT is around 10 seconds. Anything less than 5 seconds could indicate possibly dry eye syndrome.
