Northwest Oklahoma: Where the Wind Whips and the Sun Shines
Hey, Northwest Oklahoma! We all love our big skies and wide-open spaces, but did you know all that beautiful sunshine, wind, and even our famous red dirt can be tough on your eyes? We're talking about something called Pterygium, or as some folks jokingly call it, "Surfer's Eye."
Now, before you start looking for ocean waves in Woods County, let's clear something up: you don't need a surfboard to get this! While it's common for surfers, here in our neck of the woods, it's more like "Wheat Field Wanderer's Eye" or "Ranch Hand's Eye." It's caused by long-term exposure to UV rays, combined with the constant wind and dust that are just a part of life out here. Think of it as your eyes trying to grow a little extra protection from our elements – but it's not the kind of growth you want!
Fun Fact: Oklahoma often sees "Very High" to "Extreme" UV indices, especially in the summer. That means your eyes are getting a serious dose of sun, even when you're just checking fences or enjoying an evening at the ballpark or soccer field.
So, how do we protect our precious peepers?
1.Shades On! Wear sunglasses that block 100% of UV rays. Wraparound styles are even better for keeping out wind and dust.
2.Hat Up! A wide-brimmed hat adds an extra layer of shade.
3.Stay Hydrated (Eyes Too!): In our dry climate, artificial tears can help keep your eyes comfortable.
Let's keep our vision clear for all those stunning Oklahoma sunsets and starry nights! Protect your eyes, and they'll keep protecting your view of our amazing community.
