NWOSU TRiO-SSS

NWOSU TRiO-SSS The mission of the NWOSU Student Support Services grant is to aid our students.

The mission of Northwestern Oklahoma State Universityโ€™s SSS office is to aid first-generation, low-income students and students with disabilities to become successful in college. We help students become successful in college, graduate and prepare for the future. Whether that be graduate school or finding a job related to their specific degree. Our purpose evolved out of the belief that students have a greater chance of graduating when provided with the support, resources, and information necessary for success. We aim to embody a holistic program that facilitates and customizes services that address the academic and non-academic needs of participants at each level during their college experience. Eligibility: Must be low-income students attending Northwestern Oklahoma State University who are first generation or have a disability.

Spring Break Reset: Mental Health Tips for College Students.

Spring break is a great time to recharge, not just physically, but mentally too. Whether youโ€™re traveling, working, or staying home, here are a few simple ways to take care of your mental health during the break:

1. Prioritize Rest
Your body and brain need time to recover from a busy semester. Try to catch up on sleep and give yourself permission to slow down.

2. Get Outside and Move Your Body
Fresh air, sunlight, and light movement (walking, hiking, or stretching) can help improve mood and reduce stress.

3. Take a Social Media Break
Constant scrolling can increase stress and comparison. Consider unplugging for a few hours - or even a full day - to reset.

4. Stay Connected
Spend time with people who make you feel supported, like friends, family, or classmates. Meaningful connection can help protect your mental health.

5. Check In With Yourself
Ask yourself how youโ€™re really feeling. Journaling, meditation, or quiet reflection can help you process stress and emotions.

6. Use Campus Mental Health Resources
If you need extra support, you donโ€™t have to handle it alone. Many students use virtual mental health services to connect with counselors quickly - even outside normal hours. Services like TimelyCare allow students to talk to a licensed professional, sometimes within minutes.

Remember: taking care of your mental health is just as important as your academics. Use this break to reset and come back stronger for the rest of the semester. ๐Ÿ’™

Love to see our TRIO students being rewarded for their hard work! Congratulations, Itzel!

NWOSU Department of Social Work is proud to recognize Itzel Castillo, a senior social work major from Laverne, as the 2026 recipient of the Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health (IECMH) practicum stipend.

Castillo's practicum is part of the department's newly established IECMH Training Academy, funded by a $40,000 Child Welfare Professional Enhancement Program Student Payback Fund Grant. The academy provides specialized coursework, advanced training, and paid practicum experiences for students preparing to work in child and family serving fields.

"Receiving the IECMH stipend has been such a meaningful support in my professional journey. It has allowed me to expand my knowledge and skills. I'm truly grateful for the investment in my education and in the future of infant and early childhood mental health." โ€” Itzel Castillo
