Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Interprofessional Education hosted its annual Disaster Day event on the Amarillo campus on Friday. During the event, teams worked to diagnose, treat and care for volunteers role-playing as patients affected by a natural disaster. The scenario simulated a major flash flood in the Texas Panhandle after severe thunderstorms brought heavy rainfall, lightning, gusty winds and rapidly deteriorating conditions. The event challenges learners to respond to the kinds of emergencies they could face in a real-world disaster.

Learners from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine,
Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing, TTU HSC Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and the TTUHSC-Jerry H. Hodge School of Pharmacy joined with the Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine to participate in the exercise.

Mahmoud Salama Ahmed, Ph.D., assistant professor of pharmaceutical sciences at the TTUHSC-Jerry H. Hodge School of Pharmacy in Amarillo, started his career as a medicinal chemist investigating cancer. His research is now focused on finding out how to prevent heart failure and other major cardiovascular illnesses.

Ahmed and a team at UT Southwestern Medical Center started this research in 2018. Over seven years, they screened about 30 heart drugs to discover how to restore the growth of cardiac cells, which humans cannot do naturally. They discovered that antibiotics like paromomycin and neomycin have the potential to aid in cell generation.

He and a team of collaborators at the University of Arizona are looking for a path to clinical trials to test the repurposed drugs. A more long-term goal is to find other molecules that could lead to regeneration.

“I would describe myself at the interface between chemistry and biology trying to induce cardiomyocytes regeneration,” Ahmed says.
