🥗 Meet Northwest Outpatient Dietitian, Renee! 🥗

Renee has been a dietitian at NWTHS for 18 years, providing outpatient nutrition education and counseling. She also offers medical nutrition therapy for a variety of conditions, including adult and pediatric weight management, ARFID, gastrointestinal conditions, and cardiovascular and renal diseases.

For , Renee encourages everyone to focus on getting enough fiber. She notes that most adults don’t meet the recommended daily intake of about 25–30 grams of fiber. Fiber can help you feel full longer and is linked to lower cholesterol levels, improved digestion, and better blood sugar management.

Her simple tips to boost fiber include:
• Add black beans to your salad
• Choose roasted chickpeas for a snack
• Top low-fat yogurt with toasted oat cereal and strawberries for breakfast
• Swap flour tortillas for whole-grain options

🌼 This month, we honor our Daisy Award recipient – Kimber! 🌼

Kimber is recognized for her compassionate care and steady, calming presence. She took the time to truly understand and meet her patient’s needs. Read what her grateful patient had to say below:

"This was my third birth, and Kimber exceeded every nurse I have ever had – by a wide margin. She has a rare ability to move from a complete stranger to a level-ten trusted person within moments. I’m not sure how she does it, but she steps effortlessly into a role of calm, safety, and kindness.

Kimber asked thoughtful, strategic questions about my previous births – how long I pushed, whether the baby came out easily, and what challenges I’d had before. Using that information, she recognized that it was not yet time for me to start pushing. Instead, she performed what my husband and I now lovingly call the “shake the apples from the tree” maneuver to help move the baby down. We will laugh about it for years, but it was physically demanding work for her, and she never once acted like it was. That intervention significantly advanced my baby’s position and dramatically reduced my pushing time – something I believe was vital to my son’s outcome.

My son became stuck in my pelvis for approximately two minutes and ultimately required the help of multiple nurses, with the NICU team stepping in to assist. His APGAR score improved from a 2 to a 7. I truly believe that I needed to push for my usual two hours; without Kimber's earlier intervention, my baby's condition could have been far worse.

During the delivery, the room became chaotic. Multiple nurses were trying to reassure me that everything was fine, but their stress was evident. Kimber, however, looked me directly in the eye and calmly said, “He is here. He is breathing. We will talk about everything else later. In that moment, she shifted my mind from panic to trust – from fear to knowing that answers would come when I was ready. That emotional grounding was incredibly meaningful to me.

After my baby was taken to the NICU, I passed out while trying to go to the bathroom. Kimber and my husband supported me through it. A short time later, I began vomiting uncontrollably, collapsing onto the floor, and Kimber physically held me upright through it – likely ruining her own pants in the process. She never once made me feel embarrassed. She simply cared for me.

Kimber kept me in the maternity unit for six hours beyond the standard timeframe because she knew I was not stable enough to be transferred to postpartum. She was right – I ultimately required a blood transfusion. When the lab had repeated issues processing my bloodwork, Kimber persisted, sending three separate draws until the labs were done correctly. She advocated for me relentlessly.

Kimber’s clinical judgment, physical effort, emotional presence, and unwavering advocacy quite literally changed the course of my birth experience and may have saved my son from a much worse outcome. I will never forget her, and I cannot imagine a more deserving nurse for this recognition."

🌟 Demonstrating professionalism and service excellence, we are proud to recognize Darcy as our Employee of the Month. 🌟

Just read this glowing nomination:

"I would like to recognize Darcy for her extraordinary compassion, professionalism, and commitment to service excellence during an unexpected and difficult situation. Following the sudden passing of our contracted surgical instrument repair technician, his wife reached out for guidance regarding multiple surgical instruments in their possession from several healthcare facilities. Without hesitation, Darcy personally went to the family's home and ensured the safe retrieval of all instruments. She then coordinated communication and return of the instruments to the appropriate facilities, alleviating an immense burden for the grieving family. Her actions demonstrated far more than operational responsibility; they reflected her genuine kindness, integrity, and leadership in a moment when it mattered most. Her willingness to go above and beyond, both logistically and emotionally, made a meaningful difference for this family during a difficult time."

Candace has been a dietitian for 8 years, with much of her experience focused on critical care and nutrition-support populations.

Her tip for is to focus on the quality of your protein, not just the amount. She explains that protein should make up about 10–35% of your daily calories, with active individuals and older adults aiming toward the higher end of that range.

Some of her recommended high-quality protein sources include:
• Lean meats such as fish and chicken
• Eggs
• Plant-Based options to help create a well-rounded diet
