Maintaining a healthy weight is important for protecting your spine. Like other joints in the body, your spinal discs are made of soft, delicate tissue. Carrying excess weight adds extra pressure to these structures, which can accelerate wear and increase pain. Even a small amount of weight loss can help reduce strain on your spine and improve how you feel each day.

Remaining seated for long periods of time can make it challenging to sustain a neutral spinal alignment, which can lead to increased stress on the spine. Standing is often a better option. If you frequently sit during the work day, consider using a stand-up desk or a large workout ball in lieu of an office chair, which can activate the core muscles and facilitate a more upright posture!
