The jaw bone connected to the pelvic bone…?
This week we wrap our mini-series on the connections between the jaw and voice to the pelvic floor!
🎙️The musculature of the jaw reflects that of the pelvic floor. The four diaphragms throughout the body (cranial sacral, jaw musculature, respiratory diaphragm, and pelvic floor) all work in synchronicity to establish and maintain pressure systems throughout the body. (PMID 32461863)
🎙️The relative positioning of the TMJ and surrounding musculature has been shown to influence overall posture of the head, neck, shoulders, and spine in patients both in standing and during locomotion. (PMID 35265232)
🎙️Because of this relationship, the pelvic floor muscle groups can play a significant role in speech, phonation, and even singing. Activation of the pelvic floor during singing was shown to increase PFM strength, EMG amplitude, the number of quick contractions, and the length of a long hold with 3-4 weeks of practice. (LWH 0579)
