Huge news for breastfeeding mothers with ADHD — our study on atomoxetine is published!

Our study shows that only very small amounts of atomoxetine enter breast milk. Most mothers had an RID under 0.2%, and even the highest level found was only 0.65%, suggesting very low risk while breastfeeding.

Because of this new evidence, we are updating atomoxetine’s lactation safety rating from L4 to L2, reflecting a much safer profile than previously thought.

A few reports of infant fussiness have been noted, so monitoring is still important. Any concerns should be reported to systems like FAERS to help strengthen safety data.

This research provides encouraging evidence that atomoxetine may be a safe, viable ADHD treatment for breastfeeding mothers.

Celebrating Excellence at the InfantRisk Center!

We are thrilled to recognize Emily Yamada, P2 pharmacy student in Amarillo, whose outstanding research represents not only her hard work but the continued scientific impact of the InfantRisk Center team.

Emily presented the poster, “Pharmacokinetic Analysis of Atomoxetine Transfer into Human Milk,” at the 2025 ILCA Annual Conference, where it was recognized for its exceptional scientific rigor. This project—developed through nearly a year of collaboration, mentorship, and teamwork at the InfantRisk Center—demonstrates the powerful research being done to improve medication safety for breastfeeding families.

We’re proud to share that the study’s manuscript has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology (in press!), marking another milestone for both Emily and the InfantRisk Center’s research program.

Please join us in celebrating Emily’s achievement and the collective dedication of the InfantRisk Center team as we continue advancing evidence-based care for mothers and infants worldwide.

New Publication Alert!

We’re excited to announce our latest article: “Balancing Mental Health and Breastfeeding: Evaluating the Transfer of Lurasidone into Human Milk” published in the The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry by Levi S. Campbell, PharmD; Palika Datta, PhD; Kaytlin Krutsch, PhD, PharmD, MBA.

🔍 Why it matters:
• First-ever quantitative data on how the antipsychotic Lurasidone transfers into breast milk.
• Relative infant dose (RID) found to be only ~1.16% at the standard 40 mg/day maternal dose — well below the 10 % safety threshold.
• No adverse effects reported in exposed infants in the study sample.

New Publication!

We’re thrilled to announce our latest study published in the Journal of Perinatology (2025):
“Quantification of illicit and prescription drug residues in pasteurized donor human milk: a comprehensive analytical approach.”

Our team analyzed 150 pooled samples of pasteurized donor human milk — representing 742 donors — for 15 different illicit and prescription drugs. Using advanced LC-MS/MS testing, we found no clinically relevant residues in any samples.

For those unable to access the full journal article and looking for more information on our guidelines for surgery and lactation, please visit our webpage article here:

https://infantrisk.com/content/breastfeeding-surgery-and-anesthesia

This resource provides evidence-based guidance and serves as a great starting point for both healthcare providers and mothers preparing for surgery while breastfeeding.

From the article, you’ll find helpful links and tools designed to guide both providers and lactating patients through safe, informed surgical care.

It was written by Dr. Sarah Dobbs and Dr. Kaytlin Krutsch, who also authored the newly published journal article.

General anesthesia and most perioperative medications are compatible with breastfeeding, but not all. Mothers of normal term or older infants can resume pumping or direct breast feeding without interruption following anesthesia as soon as they are awake and alert with strategic drug choices.
