We are often asked to help individuals decipher the difference between Personal Care Services and Home Health Care.

If you need assistance for you or a loved one to help with tasks such as light housekeeping, meal prep, and most of all – companionship – you need Personal Care Services. In the Amarillo region, we serve under the name ComPassion At Home. In the Lubbock region, we serve under the name Compassion Personal Care Services (CPCS).

In need of more extended care to include recovering from illness, injury, a recent medical procedure or managing chronic illness? That falls under home health services. Again, in the Amarillo region, we serve under the name BSA-Compassion Home Health, and in the Lubbock Region, under the name Compassion Home Health Care.

Today is Veterans Day, in which we honor all military veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Less than one percent of our nation serves in the military. That tiny percentage represents those who have volunteered their service in uniform to protect the other 99 percent of our nation.

With great humility, it is with honor that today we appreciate our veterans. To those who prove beyond words their dedication to the land of the free and the home of the brave.

You may have seen the use of Madison Family Companies while referring to Compassion Personal Care Services and Compassion Home Health Care in Lubbock in addition to Amarillo’s BSA Compassion Home Health and Compassion At Home. Why?

The answer is simple. All four entities are locally owned and family run by two full generations of the Madison family. With a calling to healthcare more than 40 years ago, Dana Madison, DNP, MBA, BSN, RN and her husband Ronnie, MBA, BSME began their focus in building businesses to best serve the west Texas and panhandle areas. Success was found and now continues with the second generation of all three Madison sons. We thought it important for you to know each of the family members and their specific focus:

Dana Madison is Owner and Administrator of Amarillo’s BSA Compassion Home Health and Lubbock’s newly opened Compassion Home Health Care.

Ronnie Madison serves as Owner and Chief Financial Officer for all companies.

Their sons have followed as second generation. Russell Madison is Vice President of Business Development for both Home Health Care companies; Bradley Madison is Administrator of the Personal Care Services side through Compassion At Home and Compassion Personal Care Services. Michael Madison serves as Vice President of Revenue Cycle Management for all companies.

Some key things to keep in mind during Open Enrollment:

This November, during Home Care and Hospice Recognition Month, Madison Family Companies will join others statewide to highlight how home care is pivotal in addressing our state's rapidly aging population and rising healthcare costs. With the number of Texans over 80 expected to triple by 2047, scalable and sustainable home care services have never been more crucial.

For decades, home care, including home health, private duty home care, palliative care, and hospice care, has delivered interdisciplinary and holistic care. These services allow individuals to recover or receive care in the place most preferred—their homes. As demographic shifts make increasing demands on our healthcare system, Madison Family Companies emphasize the necessity of preparing to offer person-centered, high-quality care at home.

November is National Home Health Care and Hospice month, and we like to utilize this time to remind people that home health care is more than just convenient – it’s good medicine. Home care blends professional care with the warmth of the home environment and offers many people the opportunity to live with their families while receiving the care they need – and most importantly – keeping them from being rehospitalized after major surgical procedures.

We also use this time to thank all those who work in the Home Health and Hospice fields. People who choose this career are the personal caregivers – with an emphasis on care – who spend time knowing the individual needs of all those that they serve. As caregivers, we too, thank the many people who allow us into their homes each and every day.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This annual campaign aims to increase public awareness about breast cancer, its early detection, and available treatments. It's a time to support those affected by breast cancer and to promote early screenings, which can significantly improve outcomes.

It seems as though the summer has flown by, but believe it or not, it’s already time to start gearing up for the flu and pneumonia season. Influenza, commonly referred to as the flu, is a serious illness that can affect anyone.

Nationwide studies show that the flu, and related complications like pneumonia kill several thousand each year, and that only 64 percent of persons over age 65 receive a flu shot each year.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends an annual flu shot for:

• Everyone 6 months of age or older
• Residents of long-term care facilities housing persons with chronic medical conditions
• Anyone who has a long-term health problem such as:
-heart disease -kidney disease
-lung disease -metabolic disease, such as diabetes
-asthma -anemia, and other blood disorders

The influenza viruses change often, so the influenza vaccine is updated each year. Protection from the flu develops in about two weeks after getting the shot and may last up to a year.

However, the most common misconception is that people can get the flu from the vaccine itself. This is not true. Actually, viruses in the vaccine have been killed, so people cannot get the flu from the vaccine.

September is the best month to receive the flu vaccination, as that’s when the flu season begins, and the vaccination lasts throughout the season – which usually ends in March.

The pneumococcal vaccine helps to prevent pneumococcal pneumonia which is a serious infection of the lungs. The pneumococcal vaccine is recommended to be taken every five years. Traditional Medicare insurance will cover the cost of the yearly influenza vaccine and a pneumococcal vaccine every five years.
