February 28 is HIV Is Not a Crime Awareness Day — a day to stand together against laws and policies that unfairly criminalize people because of their HIV status.

Living with HIV is not a crime, yet in more than 30 U.S. states people have been prosecuted or punished simply for being HIV positive under outdated laws that don’t reflect what science now knows about HIV transmission. 

At PASO, we believe in dignity, respect, and evidence-based approaches to HIV. Let’s use this day to educate, advocate, and uplift one another — because no one should face legal punishment simply for living with HIV. 💛

Aging with HIV looks different today than it did decades ago. Thanks to advances in treatment, many people living with HIV are thriving well into their 50s, 60s, and beyond. HIV is now considered a manageable chronic condition for those who are connected to consistent care.

However, aging with HIV can come with unique challenges.

People aging with HIV may experience higher rates of cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, bone density loss, cognitive changes, and certain cancers. Long-term inflammation, the effects of some older medications, and the natural aging process can all play a role. Mental health concerns, social isolation, stigma, and financial instability can also impact overall wellness.

Medication management becomes especially important, as older adults may take multiple prescriptions for different conditions. Coordinated care between providers is key to avoiding drug interactions and ensuring the best outcomes.

The good news? With regular medical care, healthy lifestyle choices, and strong support systems, people living with HIV can and do live long, full lives.

Panhandle AIDS Support Organization (PASO)

The Panhandle AIDS Support Organization, Inc. (PASO) is a not-for-profit support agency. PASO opened its doors in August of 1987 offering education to the general public and emotional support to those persons infected with HIV disease in the 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle.

Today PASO is a full service community based organization with a case management system which provides referrals to doctors, dentists and optometrists, therapeutic counseling, transportation, housing assistance, and support groups.

PASO became a Local Performance Site of the South Central AIDS Education Training Center in 2008. Our agency is committed to improving the quality of life of patients living with HIV/AIDS through the provision of high quality professional education and training.

Opportunities include in-house AIDS education programs, and a larger Annual HIV /AIDS Symposium through collaboration with the Amarillo College Center for Continuing Healthcare Education.
