As we prepare for spring at Perry Wellness Center, we do some final catch-up on a favorite winter celebration – Valentines Day.

We recently shared photos from the crowning of our King and Queen of Valentines Day. Now we share a celebration of our Valentine dance contest winners, dressed in colors for the occasion.

Left to right, they are: Sonya Mullins, Cornelius Ross, and Tamika Brown. Y’all rock!

In this last week of “Boost Your Self Esteem Month,” Perry Wellness Center is sharing and reframing some professionals’ tips for enhancing self-esteem in our daily lives:

Practice positive self-talk.
Accept yourself for who you are.
Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone.
Celebrate yourself.
Practice daily self-care.

More details can be found on the Calm Sage website at: https://www.calmsage.com. The site also recommends several helpful books on self-esteem for the lay reader.

Say what you will about the campus of Perry Wellness Center, but we are never drab! Color and creativity are on display year-round. We may be lauded most for our landscaping – much of it for sale at our market.

But the creative mind is always at work, and art instructor Phyllis Smith (pictured below with art classroom artists) helps interested peers learn or develop skills in various arts and crafts, displayed throughout the center’s buildings. Between art shows and seasonal market sales, the general public has frequent opportunities to check out local talent.

What’s red and pink and white all over, with hearts, flowers, and cherubs shooting arrows? If you’re on the campus of Perry Wellness Center, it must almost be Valentines Day. Each year, we hold a Valentines party for peers and staff, with all the above, including refreshments and décor.

Socialization and support are critical to mental health and/or substance abuse recovery, so we are both lighthearted and serious when we think of the relationships we treasure.

There’s been enough snow and rain flying through the air lately. Watch out for golden arrows instead, and grab a few chocolates while you’re at it!

In this last week of Substance Use Disorders Treatment Month, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), along with Perry Wellness Center, offers these recommendations for treatment and recovery through building treatment-friendly communities:

“Do you think someone in your life is struggling with substance use disorder? Are you looking for ways to help and support them but are not sure how or where to begin? Learn how to start the conversation with your loved ones, and find resources to help.”

“You don’t have to walk this journey alone. Peer-based recovery support & community centers connect people who get it—sharing stories, hope, and recovery. Don't be afraid to reach out for support. SAMHSA has resources to help.”

“Adding your voice to a recovery advocacy organization could help you find community that strengthens your recovery—and could help you play a role in strengthening someone else’s.”

“Two heads are better than one,” the saying goes, and art instructor Phyllis Smith demonstrates this truism daily with peer students at Perry Wellness Center.

Art classes are expanding at PWC and Miss Phyllis finds that one-on-one consultation remains important for answering questions and tackling new projects.

Recently, several peers worked on art projects for Martin Luther King Day, including Sean Eidell, pictured below. When he raised a design query, Miss Phyllis provided some hands-on assistance, saying, “I like to help one-on-one with questions.”

January is Substance Use Disorder Treatment Month. Throughout the month, Perry Wellness Center is sharing information from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) 2026 digital toolkit.

This week’s topic is wraparound services. For individuals recovering from substance use disorders, a treatment environment may include employment, legal, housing, employment, and other community supports, in addition to traditional medical care. Here are some options and resources to consider:

“Recovery is more than sobriety. It’s rebuilding your future. While seeking treatment, education & job-support services can help you gain meaning and independence.”

“Recovery housing offers a substance-free home and community in a safe, supportive environment.”

“Meaningful work can restore purpose and confidence. Job training and employment support help people rebuild their future.”

“Parenting classes, childcare, and family programs strengthen connection and stability during treatment and recovery. Families heal together.”

This year’s Substance Use Disorder Treatment Month’s theme is “Treatment Works! Find the Path that Works for You.” Help spread the word and check out the resources below:

Perry Wellness Center director Stuart Perry is a man who is known for his love of animals, big ideas, and hard work. A recent state audit highlighted these characteristics, as he worked hard for a successful audit and made a new canine friend in the process.

A tiny, mixed-breed dog was hanging out in pen in a nearby office while its owner was hard at work during the audit. On the morning after the audit was completed, Stuart headed to his office, exhausted from the preceding days, and decided he needed some time out. After reassigning some tasks, Stuart noticed the small dog watching him.

Stuart explained, “He left his pen, came into my office, and climbed on a blanketed chair. Both the dog and I were exhausted, so we napped together and enjoyed our day. I felt quite secure with this ‘guard dog’ at my side.”

In the photo below, Stuart’s new friend waits for play time or sleepover at PWC.

In Part II of our recognition of Substance Use Disorders Treatment Month, Perry Wellness Center offers the following quotes on treatment and recovery from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA):

“Different treatment options exist for substance use disorders – there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Clinical addiction care offers a range of treatments to meet you where you are. Find treatment that works for you.”

“There are multiple pathways to recovery: clinical care, community support, therapy, faith, self-management. What matters most is finding what works for you.”

“Whole-person care saves lives. Effective treatment of substance use disorders can include medications, counseling & recovery supports. Integrated health services can help patients connect with substance use treatment.”
