Phoebe Sumter Foundation is proud to host our inaugural Big Shuck Oyster Roast, an evening of fresh oysters, local cuisine, and live music in support of the greatest needs of Phoebe Sumter Medical Center. This event is more than just a celebration of food and community; it is an opportunity to make a direct impact on healthcare across Southwest Georgia. Since 1984, the Foundation has worked alongside business and community leaders to fund critical projects, from building the new hospital to creating wellness resources like the Mattie H. Marshall Cross Country Trail and the Gail Hooks Memorial Garden. By supporting this event, sponsors play a vital role in ensuring we continue to enhance patient care, address urgent hospital priorities, and provide exceptional healthcare to the people we serve. If you are interested in sponsoring this event, please contact the Phoebe Sumter Foundation at 229-931-1300.

Happy Black History Month! All month long, we’ll be celebrating by sharing weekly facts that honor the pioneers who shaped our history and our healthcare future. Our first spotlight goes to Dr. Cornelius McKane and Dr. Alice Woodby McKane, two groundbreaking physicians who reshaped healthcare and education for Black communities. Dr. Cornelius McKane and his wife, Dr. Alice Woodby McKane, Georgia’s first Black female physician became influential medical pioneers after arriving in Savannah in 1892. Together, they founded the McKane Training School for Nurses in 1893, one of the first nursing schools for African Americans in the South and later opened McKane Hospital for Women and Children to expand care for Black families. Dr. Alice also served as a U.S. medical examiner in Liberia before returning to Savannah to continue her groundbreaking work.
